What is "Too much tire" for NA's?

Yo,

Looking to replace my 16 x 7 wheels with possible some 16 x 8's, or 17 x 7 or 8's.

I'm having a dilemna when it comes to tire size (width). I'm pretty happy with the stock 205/55-16's, I really haven't said, "I need more grip!"

I recently purchased some Falken Azenis in 215/45-16...and they look pretty damn wide.

What is "too much tire" for NA RX-7's? 225? 235? I want a tire that grips, but also slips...having maximum grip all the time is no fun...I want to be able to get the rear end out with my whopping 160 rear wheel horsies.

Does that make any sense? I'm sure I could go with some 17 x 9's running 255...but what's the point? My car weighs 2700lbs and is low horsepower.

What have you guys found to be the best compromise between grip and fun?

this is a misnomer. more grip=more fun.

hmmm my 215 kumho 712 already grip to well. just about imposible to slip when its dry unless its on uneven pavement and my lack of an LSD becomes evident. im gona go down to 205/40s here in a few weeks when i get my new tires because they are cheaper, smaller diameter, and will slip a little more.

there are a lot of factors. but as long as you still want it to slip on demand i say dont go over 205 with a gripy compound like the azenis or 712. hell if you really want fun go with some 195 fate-o tires. it will be a million miles of sideways fun!

I think 245s in the back would be too much for an n/a. 225s in the back would be good. I have some 215/55/15 FM901s in the back of mine and I have a hard time getting the rear end loose. I also dont have an LSD so that makes it a bit harder. I would get either 215s or 225s in the back with some 215s up front.

I think that FC's seem to really like 225's all around... If you were going with a wider rim (x8 or whatever) then even 235's woudl be ok..

falkens rock, I've got a set on order for my 10AE...

Gripwise though, you're going to see more of a difference with compound than size.. 355 cheapies will have less grip than 205 hoosier rs303's...

i had 225/45/17 all around on my car for a while and loved it. they griped really well. but when i went away for a snowboarding trip my bro and dad susprised me with 2 new front tires. the sizes downsized to a 205/50/17, but they grip even better than the old ones( maybe because thes actuaally have decent tread on them) but if i was you i would go with either 215 or 225

i've got 255/40/17's rear on a 8" wide wheel. they look hella sexy and have lots of grip.

they are also too much for an n/a... but what the hell? i'm going j-spec at the end of the year anyways.

Yo,

I was looking to go with a 215/45-17 all the way around.

Should be just about right, unless anyone else thinks otherwise?

I think that 225-235's would be great. I think that Rishies car had 255's in the back and 225's in the front, he said it kicked ***, doesn't he have a GTUs like Kevin?

225s are popular because thats pretty much all the tire you can fit up front on an FC without running into the suspension. I can honestly said Ive only spun out once with my 225s, and that was hitting gravel mid-turn, but it all worked out fine. But I also dont push my car to the limits on streets with other cars, curbs, and trees.

As stated before, I think that compound makes as much difference as the size of the tires, assuming the size doesnt change too much. I've got 205/55-16 Kumho 712's in the rear, and they grip pretty well. Right now my limiting factor is the front tires, but I think that with better tires all around, it would have very good grip just with this size.

215's should be fine for your level of power. I still stick by my original prognosis...it'll come in handy when you P-port the motor

I don't like the understeer I get on the 7 when I put larger tires in back. Not a good idea.

I got 205/40/17 712's
They grip well and there not too wide so you can
give your seven an aggressive stance

All you need to do is go faster... I`ve done powerslides during Solo2 using 205's ,225's and using 225 BFG R-1's.

I recently put some Yoko YK420s 245/50/16 on the rear of my TII and have like the results alot, since my car is tail happy anyway (rb toe elims) It grips much much more in the turns now with out loosing traction, my other tires were 205s :p
