what are some indicators, or warning signs of low engine compression?

I got a "visual 25 point diagnostic" on my 88 turbo today at the Mazda dealership. It was a pretty cheesy deal, and the only things they really told me were little things i already knew (pretty much a waste of 45 minutes). Except! they told me that my car had extremely low, or no compression in one of the rotors... They did not do a compression test, or drive it, but he told me laughingly Im getting half as much hp as i should be getting... Im not really sure what to make of this startling news. To me, my car drives fine, if not great. From the perspecive of an unlearned enthusiast (me), they are full of crap. So... If anyone knows anything about anything, some imput would be nice. Could they, in their hasty inspection have mistaken some easily fixable problem (like spark plugs) for something as major as low/no compression? thanks alot!
