What should I expect to pay for a 86-88 rx7?

I'm going to have around 1500-2000 to spend.
and live in the seattle area.

what kind of condition should I expect the car to be in for that price range? and what would a pretty good shape one cost me?

well that will get you an ok FC not without dents and some dings. I payed 2k bux for mine and it has some damage to the fenders and needed a new hood and paint obviouusly.

For that price range, expect slightly high mileaged (or rebuilt engine), ok interior/exterior condition FC. Expect a few things not to work too (maybe AC, radio, or the power windows if equipped.) I bought mines for $2700 which I thought was a good deal. Talked the seller down $300.

Just to give you an idea, mines an '88 SE. Everything worked. Clean interior/exterior, perfect paint, and 70K on the original engine.

i got my 89 for $1800 about a month ago. was advertised on the side of the street for 2200/obo rebuilt motor with about 15K on it. it had a dented fender which i replaced and some small dings which i will be onto soon.

there it is. every little thing i do to tune it up makes it better and better.

I'm kinda stuck...I want a turbo because I'm searching for more power...I like the n/a's because there simple and a bit more reliable (although TII"s can be too). I just thinking spending several thousand to have to sturggle to reach 250rwhp and still be reliable is kinda ridiculous. I want boost bad! My 7 is gorgeous, and I had plans to do the TII swap this summer. I just dont know if its worth it, I wanted to buy a j-spec, and rebuild it since there good cores. I like the rotary engine very much and would love to stay with it. Selling my car and buying a TII is an option b/c it would be easier to start with a turbo car, but there not very easy to come by in decent condition around here....decisions, decisions.

Although I do think the TII swap would be fun as well as rebuilding the motor, but its costy.

I bought my first 7 for $500. I talked the guy down 200 bucks. It ran too. smoked a bit and then i blew at least one apex seal. but 500 bucks for a new block and a week for the learing experance and it kept up with stock TIIs. *some mild mods*

I just got anohter 2nd gen. body is perfect just needs a new engine. More engine swapping!

If you look around you can find a good deal. just dont buy the first one you find.

Good luck

I just bought my first FC, had 2 first gens, dropped 2K for it. 117K mi, 2 + 2, everythings orig, drives wonderfully, no dents, only probs are, surprise, surprise, electrical. cruise switch is on and off, and wipers dont work on intermitt. both easily found on ebay, no problem really. guy even included TONS of paperwork with it, @ least 20 pages of oil changes, brake pad replacements and even waxings from the last 16 years.

I was a Shucks one day, helping this kid who broke his AFM trying to install an intake w/out the proper adapter plate and I see some guy walking into the store with an inter. housing..I was thinking holy ****! So I left the kid and went to talk to him...nice guy..his names Kill No Cone on here. Nice to talk to other rotor heads..

I agree, my car is also perfect for a TII transplant. Its expensive but I do want boost pretty bad too, even though I've barely had the car long enough.

Oh well, we'll see. I don't have too much cash with me but hopefully I can buy this wrecked TII that I might get.

wow, that's a purty lookin 7, both of you.

The thing is, I don't know my exact price range, but right now I'm carless, and have been since february 14th (damn valentines day), when to avoid someone who was illegally past the line at a light, i couldn't make the left turn at the speed i was going because that car blocked me from the angle i needed... (yet I've taken the turn much faster). so i had to go wide and couldn't get out of it. realized a second to late to back out that I couldn't make it with the car there and took out 2 6x6 wood pillars with my 82 celica gt that was worth about 500 (my stereo in it was worth more than the car...)

but anyway, I was in another accident on the way to school (someone ran into us (we were in a tow truck) at 40mph).
I've gotten 2 doc visits, 1 ER visit, 1 xray, and soon to be a total of 6-8 physical therapy visits. So geiko is going to be forking me over a hefty sum for my strained lumbar.

one of the others in the vehicle i was in got an ER visit and xray and is getting 1800 (3x medical bill, she'll pocket 1200 of that). I'm guessing I'll get quite a bit more.

I'll be settling sometime in may or june when my therapy and stuff is done.

but until then, I might have talked my grandma into lending me 1500-2000 (because I don't know exactly what I'll get from the settlement) for a car. I need a nice reliable 2 door sports car (my preference). she won't lend me the money unless i get the car checked out and make sure its not gonna crap out on me like my past 2 cars did (73 dodge dart and 82 celica, both had problems).

I would love to get your 7, it looks great. I would love more detailed info and reasons for the certain mods (yes of course it is to make the car quicker faster etc, but I'm still a noob to the rx7's, but I've always loved the 3rd gens, and would like to own a 2nd gen). but I don't know if I could get 2500...

I'm a senior at henry m jackson highschool. and just found out how much I'm going to actually have to fork over for syracuse university next year. they are offering me 12,225 for 2003-2004 year, and its gonna cost me another 25000 of my own to go there. parents aren't helping. So i have to figure out if i can get a loan that big. I don't plan on taking the car with me to NY. I'll either sell it in august or keep it here for parents to use while I'm gone and for me to use when I'm back on vacations.

but that is my situation....

anyway, most of that was rambling.
but I would definitely love to look at your car, dunno if I can afford it though I'd definitely pay that much if I could afford it. Anyway you could go lower (even though it'd be crazy, lol)

I'm also worried about the engine blowin, cause I know rx7's can be testy... but It looks like you've taken very good care of it.

The amount you spend depends on a couple of things:
The less you spend means more work to get it the way most of us like our cars. If you spent the low end of your range (1500 bucks) and your not familiar with the workings of the RX-7 or not mechanically inclined the car could end up non-operational pretty quick. I spent $1200 for my 88 Vert, mechanically it's pretty good but the exterior and interior need work. The Arizona sun pretty much ate it up. But Notice I said pretty good mechanically - two days after I bought it the fuel line split below the intake manifold and I had a engine fire. Luckily I was a block from my house and was able to pull into my front yard and get to my garden hose before I lost everything. A thirty second fire cost me about $400 in parts and about 30 days working on the car myself - replacing hoses and vacuum lines, etc.
If you want a more reliable RX-7 you should save a few more bucks and spend between $2500-3000. You'll spend less time under the hood and more time behind the wheel.

I notice you took out the Air Pump, EGR valve, and Air Control Valve. just curious to why. I know why you took out the p/s.

How well does the car do on emissions? Does it even pass?

what is the opm? as well as, whats the point of running premix and why do you need to? yes it's probably a stupid question, but gotta learn if I'm going to be buying an rx7.

Marcus219 probably lives in a state were emissions testing is not done, although the air pump only assists the catalytic converters and some cars can still pass with it not working or gone.
Your other question about the OMP (oil metering pump).
RX-7's inject a very small amount of engine oil into the combustion chamber as the motor runs to lubricate it. Some guys remove it for the weight savings and add a pre-mix oil directly to the gas tank. Hope this answers some of your questions.

washington requires emissions...

how much is the premix? and how much would it cost to get the omp put back on so I wouldn't have to deal with the hassle of premixing? how often do you have to add the premix to the gas tank?

Arizona also has emissions and I have all my emissions equipment Intact. I just put a brand new pre-cat and cat on my car yesterday (old one was clogged and pretty much shot- common with these cars).
I pay about a buck and a half for 16oz and add half each and every time I fill up. I still have my OMP on the car (not working though) so I don't know about taking it off.
Adding pre-mix is not really that much of a hassle considering all the work these cars can be. I do all the work on it myself and unless you have money to burn you'll probably learn to do alot of it yourself too.

Allrighty, let me chime in here and give you some "good" information, no offense cmanasseri. For the pre-mixing reasons, there are MANY reasons why..I could list them out like I have many times, but this website will answers all your questions...

http://fc3s-pro.com/TECH/FAQ/premix.htm

As for the emissions question, yes, Washington does have emissions, but only in certain counties, Thurston County (where I live), has no emissions. The air pump is gone b/c I'm running a Racing Beat header and pre-silecner, so I have no catilytic converter, the acv is pointless with no air pump and the EGR is just one less emissions BS on the car. I still have a bonez high flow cat and downpipe that will fit from the manifold to the catback as well as two working air pumps. The omp can be put back on fairly easily, I have two OMP's, the only thing you will need is the lines, which are damn expensive. Though read that pre-mixing FAQ and you will understand why its better and going back would be pointless. I run a 128:1 ratio or one ounce per gallon. It easy, just put in the pre-mix before you put in the gas, it mixes fine. Even if you forget to put it in 1st, its fine, going around some nice corners will get it mixed fine....

My AAS actually works I just found out, you can here it working (also batter guage drops) and you can feel it firm up alot..I turned it to sport mode and normal mode and drove over some bumps and hard corners, and noticed quite a difference. The car has been repainted professionally and was a HIGH quality job. Its saphire blue. I bough the car from a RX-7 enthusiasts with a 10AE s4 with a 20B three rotor in it. Runs strong, idles solid. All work has been performed by me, new clutch as in mod list. Any other specific questions feel free to ask...
