I'm surprised someone hasn't said VTEC yet.

Some of this **** is priceless. I would have to agree with whoever said better guages (or more accurate. I forget which it was.)
Some modern vehicles come with factory carbon fiber, hence my reply to "what new fe(a)ture on modern cars would you add to your second gen?" Perhaps a hood or trunk lid painted factory color. Lightweight, stylish, and as long as they are painted, not garish. Fenders would work, but i'd be a bit apprehensive about driving around an FC with carbon doors.

Yes, a digital dash like the stock unit on an S2000. I thought it was an interesting design and a bit more modern than the 2ND gen unit. I'm sure it would afford more detail to the driver as it could display more exact readings than the stock unit.

All-wheel drive would have more grip obviously. I remember seeing a picture of a 2ND gen rally car a while back and thought it would be cool to have an AWD Turbo II. I'm sure those RX-7 owners that live in snow prone areas would love to be able to drive them in those harsh winters with just a wheel change. I'm not too fond of slipping around in the snow myself, at least not on accident.

Lastly, you can't put VTEC on a rotary as it doesn't have a valvetrain.

Remember, the internet is serious business.

*thinks*

Honestly, there are a lot of features that my FC has that I wish newer cars had.

*The short-throw, easy to reach turn signal lever on the dash
*The full set of gauges
*The coolant level sensor (it would save a LOT of engines)
*The oil level sensor (same)

But if I could have a few new things on my FC... *thinks*
*Steering wheel radio controls would be nice
*A good 4 channel antilock system with modern technology (closer to Mercedes/BMW than Chevy)
*Traction control that could be COMPLETELY disabled (modulating the rear brakes to simulate a LSD would help slick weather handling quite a bit)
*A more advanced ECU that could run the engine more efficiently (No need for 9:1 AFRs on a NA)
*Better synchros (though I'm sure they were fine when it was stock, I've driven some new cars with triple cone carbon synchros that were just beautiful)
*A HUD (Heads Up Display) showing RPM, speed, and a big "LOOK AT YOUR GAUGES" light that would indicate oil/coolant temperature issues

I think that's about it. Most of those should be doable aftermarket, though.

Ditch the 7 speed and Tiptronic (tiptronics have no soul!)

I like the net/panel, that should have been factory installed

i'd add some factory aero opption, like a full downforce kit (kinda like the Lotus Elise vs. Exige)
I wonder if there was ever a factory net produced. I can't even recall how many times my guitar case, practice amp, or etc crashed into my seat when I was cutoff on the freeway and wished I had one.

I have an 86 DD thats my year round car (the TII doesn't see snow) and even IF that car was AWD no f***ing way would I still want to drive it in the winter. Ever driven these cars around in -35 or -40? Ever tried STARTING it at those temps?

Not to mention that AWD would make this thing even more of a pig on gas and even more of a gutless wonder below 4500rpm.

I wish most cars had a similiar blinker switch. On my gf's saturn you have to reach over and flick it and I always think to myself how lame it is and how lazy I have become from just using my index finger to signal a lane change.

I dig on the hud display too. Something with RPM, water temp, boost, and MPH would be awesome. Don't they put those on the new Corvette?

I'm pretty sure it's at least an option on the new 'vettes. And, I suppose water temp/boost would be good numbers to have on there as well, especially for the track guys. Maybe oil temp as an option. I was planning to just tie those readings into the computer & have it raise a warning light, but I can definitely see where having a readout of important fluid temperatures would be useful to some people.

Sarcasm?!? What's that?!?

Seriously though, the limits on what we could modernize due to the initial question that started the thread left me mostly fantasizing at ways to get the most out of a stock engine. If perhaps modernizing the engine/turbo/fuel system/number of rotors/etc was available i'd put them into the ring as well, but left stock and only being able to add cupholders and back up lights i'd just leave it be.

I mean, why add crap?

drifting is fun. and yes half the **** on here is bogus, minus maybe weight saving things and suspension, but i dont really like the look of carbon fiber. i'll stick to my aluminum hood.

as for parts, lexon rear hatch.

train horn.......to scare the **** out of the dumbasses that almost crash into me everyday.........

LED tails like the G35 (brighter means less likely to get rear ended)

HID's that come on the new lexus.....they turn 15 degrees to provide lighting around corners

RX8 seats

Smog-legal FMIC.

GPS

Lo-Jack (it going in there eventually but it's new)

the Caddy technology with infrared cameras that project any hazzards ahead on a DARK road.

Seats and mirrors that record different seating positions(when My fiancee and I trade cars....which is often)

10-yr powertrain WARRANTY but seriously....I'd love it.

VTEC: Believe it or not the 5th & 6th ports opening is similar to VTEC. VTEC opens the valves earlier at higher rpms for extra air flow. The 5th & 6th ports are likely placed earlier in the Wankel's rotation. You don't want this at lower rpms b/c it also causes intake/exhaust overlap, which sucks some power & mpg (especially at low rpms). Heavily ported rotaries lose some low end power. i.e., FCs had VTEC 3 years before Honda.

moonroof: I have one. Never use it. Motor gets stuck sometimes, though. Gears probably need greasing.
aero kit: Besides the front and side bits, it also got a rear spoiler.

+1 modern interior, lots of other things mentioned

I'd like real rear seats myself. Not moving wooden Pinocchio real, but real-boy real.

forget cup holders haha..in the center behind the center column I have a real rotor mounted in the middle with a wooden column that runs down to the floor and is covered with black leather to blend with the interior, took forever to make but it looks good, holds my drinks minus a big gulp and has a rotor in the middle (I feel like an RX8 with the rotor accent everywhere). Options I would add would be for my glass sunroof a thing that slides out and covers the glass because it gets hot in there during the day. interior pieces made out of material that can stand up to 20+ years of UV damage, lights us can adjust with a button of what direction u can point the lights in when driving at night ( like when taking a corner angle them towards the turn) and more interior lighting then just the dome light but rear mirror so I can see in the back without opening up the rear and flipping that switch...that is all

because the 5 speed is just fine CONSIDERING HE SAID NO ENGINE MODS ( AS IN STOCK CAR), Paddle shifters WOULD be cool but it's an FC........come on........and if you CANNOT see the BENEFIT of the LIghts that adjust to the curve then you're a plain ol' silly goose.

I would love to have a 6-speed tranny. Have similar gearing to stock with the 4.30 rear end, but with a taller OD gear for better gas milage, like most modern sports cars have. I personally like the regular shifter for a road car, but the paddle shifter would be baddas for a track car. I'm not talking about a lousy man-u-matic, but a real paddle shifter like on Ferraris. It takes a bit of getting used to, but after a little while its amazing.
As for what I'd like, the first thing I thought of was cup holders. After that, stereo controls and cruise control buttings on the steering wheel are very handy. My wife's car has them and they are very nice. I hate auto-climate control, though. I turn it off, but it still tries to do **** for me. Just gimme my fan-speed and temperature sliders and I'm happy.

a real alternator, modern efi, better designed gauges/interior, wishbone rear suspension. anything else and you are loosing the soul of the 7. Paddle shifters are for the lazy, abs is for minivans, auto climate for luxury cars, all of which we arent. The RX7 is a SPORTS CAR not a touring car or european luxury crusier. If we would have gotten all that **** in the 7 it would have been something else like......oh yeah the supra MKIII!! Fat and lazy.

For my FC Vert... A Hard retractable roof.
For my FD... A rear view camera, so I can eliminate the mirror that blocks much of my forward line of sight.

yeah he said engine, he didnt say i couldnt have an upgraded trnasmission.. and i suppose formula racers are lazy. ferraris have paddle shifters. you dont have to use em you can still use the clutch and shifter if you want. and my FC has cup holders, so i dont need much.
