Question What mufflers sound good from e-bay or.....????

I will be making up my own exhaust package for my TII swap and plan to have it welded here locally, but I want to make sure I buy mufflers that can hold up to rotary heat and sound good and mellow. Also should I have a presilencer before the Y pipe?

looking for suggestions based on what you guys have tried.

I bought some "Apex N1 Styles" for 50$ each or so... loud as hell, dont buy!
I bought some Greddy Evo style mufflers from ebay as well, about 60$ each, much better looking IMO and much quieter... heres a pic..

The 5zigen ones suck, the bomz evo's sound pretty good on an N/a with a resinator or some form of presilencer.

I got some 'turbo' mufflers from my local muffler shop. They look nice and sound real good. 2 1/4" pipes and a big ole silencer, about 18" long. No flames though, dangit.

Generally, you want the BIGGEST CAN possible. While this is a horrible rule for weeding out the drunk bar chicks, even if youve got the mother of all beer goggles on, it's what you have to go by for the exhaust.
The bigger can makes for a deeper tone and a much nicer resonance, mayeb even a little rumble at idle! We need every bit we can get with these cars.
Ever see how big the cans on the top-quality ($$$ )exhausts like RB, HKS, or Greddy are? They are huge.

I would definately get a presilencer. They are Godaweful loud without one. I know that T-II's are quieter, but still. Also, the presilencer gets rid of the trademark rotary "buzz". It sounds good on a racecar, but not on something thats gonna see the streets. I've got the Apex N1 cat-back exhaust on my car, and I love it. It sounds good, and Isn't too loud, in my opinion. Ive got a stait pipe, though, so I dont know about cats.

I've got a borla xr1 presilencer, and two edelbrock mufflers. It's almost too quiet IMO, but was loud as hell before I put the turbo in.
I think it sounds the best with JUST the presilencer, but just a little louder than I want.

So it sounds like a borla XR1 presilencer with some big can mufflers like the Greddy EVO's ought to do it. I want it to be quieter rather than loud if I go in any direction, this is a vert. and I want to able to relax on the weekends with it and not rumble everywhere I go.

Where is a good place to get a presilencer? Ebay?

John

Find one of those exhaust shops that do not care about cutting out catalytic converters and prefer to take cash. They do good work, and have good prices (the guy I go to is cheaper than any of the car-x sort of places around here). They will have several mufflers (most likely they will not hold up to the heat of the rotary), piping, and presilencers available. Their presilencers will work just fine for rotary applications.

The muffler I am running is a Borla ProXS. It is a great sounding muffler with my TO4B. No presilencer.

Here is my setup:
3" DP and MP
Borla ProXS in the location of the catalytic converter.
3" piping from the muffler straight out the back of the car.

I ordered my muffler from a local performance store that can order from Borla.

I think my car is a little louder than you want. It is roughly the same volume (just a little bit louder) than an Apexi N1 with DP and MP. If you can listen to a turbocharged Rex with the Apexi, then you will know approximately what my car sounds like. I believe it is a little bit louder for cruising than you want from an exhaust.

k....here is a noob question. lets say i do this and it is to loud cant you put a thing with a lot of little holes in the tip of your mufler to mufle the sound more. i am looking for performance more then anything, so if its loud and gives me one more hp its worth it, i just dont want a fart can thats loud as hell.

If you do the same setup as me, and it is too loud, you can add a second muffler in the stock location - basically this uses the Borla ProXS as a presilencer.

thansk that helps a lot.....i just got a welder and was wondering if i could do this myselft, would haveing two mufflers hinder performance and stuff. i think it looks better having just a pipe and no muffler at the end like yours. i will do what you have and see how it works out.

The Borla XR1 is fairly cheap IMO, around $100.
It's great quality and gives a nice low tone, loud exhaust note.

Shipping a muffler 3 day should be around $20-$30 if you include the packaging. Those mufflers aren't small and depending how it's packaged, it could fall in the "odd shape" category adding extra cost.

Two mufflers shouldn't hinder any performance that you could discern. You want to make sure you have a good flow path (no sharp bends and good welds) where it's smooth and straight as possible.
You can order Y-pipes and angled mandrel bends from Burns or other piping places. Make sure you get the right piping for the welding (i.e. if you're using a MIG, don't get aluminum or stainless steel).

AJatx is correct, the muffler was 99 bucks.

pinkfloyd - I do not think you could do this setup yourself, at least not as smoothly. My exhaust guy made lots and lots of small bends in the pipe to get it to fit flushly up in the recesses for the stock exhaust. He was very meticulous about its fit, and I was very impressed with his skill at getting the pipe to fit. I do not think this would be easy to do without the proper equipment to bend 3" pipe (which even with the correct tools, is much more difficult than 2.5" pipe).

Well I haven't seen this mentioned yet so I might as well throw it out.

If I were to buy an exhaust off Ebay, the only one I would get (other than stock) would be the Racing Beat cat back. Power, sound suppression, awesome tone, great looks, and affordable when you find them used. Their only drawback is excessive weight compared to a single. You turbo guys probably don't want duals anyhow.

If you're going to buy the Borla XR1, best place to buy IMHO is www.summitracing.com and shipping & handling is $6.

While I agree the Borla XR1 is going to be a better muffler than the ProXS, it is $140 more. This cost difference is a big factor, at least I think, for people asking about ebay mufflers.

For anyone interested in why the XR1 is a better muffler, it is because it is a true 3" (or 4", depending on inlet and outlet sizes) inner diameter, whereas the ProXS (what I am running, and am very pleased with) tapers down to 2.5" (for the 3" inlet and outlet muffler) inside the muffler. While this does restrict flow somewhat, it is still a very high flow muffler.
