What to look for in a GEN 2 racer?
I'm thinking about getting a used gen 2 RX7 for weekend autoX and track days. What should I be looking for? A TII or N/A car? Which year? and are there any special quirks that I should know about? What do you guys think of the RX7 in terms of performance, cost of upkeep, and ease of maintance interms of a race car? I like working on cars, but I like driving them even more, so I don't want something that is stuck in a garage 1/2 the time. I've done some searches on the web on used RX7s, but I'm looking for some more race oriented advice. The other cars on my list are gen1 Miatas and older FR corollas, but I'm quite set on the RX7, any thoughts on the merits of the RX7 versus these other cars?

Well, considering it will be a "race car".
I would first look at which classes (among different sanctioning bodies) a RX-7 (whether Turbo or NA) will be placed in. That way, it will help determine "how competitive" you can be.
From there, determine which sanctioning body you want to compete in.
Then look at what is involved w/ maintenance, upkeep, etc.
Check out the Race section of this forum for more advice.

I don't know what you plan to run in, but I run SCCA Solo II. A second gen NA runs E-stock, and a TII runs B-stock. To kinda put this into perspective, BS has new Porcshe Boxters, and ES doesn't. Check out the SCCA website for the rules, and I will post a link to the classes. If you have any questions, let me know.
