What important gauges to guy for mostly stock T2?
Im planning on putting in a few guages, but im not sure what to get besides boost. The car has the following mods, 3inch catback, hks intake, 255 fuel, FCD, MBC. I would assume get a boost gauge, then what else? EGT? Oil press, fuel press, water temp? I live in arizona but my car runs fine in the heat. Please help thanks

-boost gauge, as the stock one is pretty inadequate once past stock levels
-EGT , really helpful in determining if you are having a problem with the engine
- A/F , might not be the most accurate thing in the world, but it will let you know if something is wrong, if it goes drastically different from where it normally is
-Coolant/oil temp gauges , pretty important, but I wouldnt say "necessary". Others may disagree though. The stock coolant temp gauge on a S4 is an analog gauge, and will move according to the temp. The S5 one is pretty much just a dummy gauge. It will stay in the center for a very wide range of temps. Once it starts to move toward hot, its usually already way too late.

Haven't we ALL heard this
Top two -
1. Water temp - A great gauge that tells if it is over heating and is sensitive enough to let you see your thermostat operate.
2. Boost - Since the stock gauge is not accurate and hard to read. Very needed.
Runner up
1. Oil pressure - Since there are problems with the stock gauge. Such as the sender failing to work. There are prob. more posts like, "HELP, no oil pressure", than FBs built.
Persanaly, I do not believe EGT is worth it. To hard to compare results to others since there are many variables.
If you are seriously considering an EGT and cheap AFR gauge do this. Save your money on both and put that towards a DIY Wideband. What is a wideband?
Search for Wideband and Techedge on yahoo or something.

EGT reacts WAY TOO SLOW to let you know if theres a problem. If you're drag racing and it runs lean it won't react in time and pop goes the motor. I have boost, water temp, oil pressure, oil temp, volts, egt, and a/f however. All are greddy or vdo. In your case I'd get a big easy to read accurate boost gauge such as the 60mm mechanical greddy. The rest of the stock gauges as long as they work should be fine if the car is stock.

I would say that theory will not hold up. The exhaust gas is going to cool down rapidly before the oil temps do. That is what you want to cool down. The oil not the exhaust.
However, I read in some places since we have water cooled turbos in addition to the oil. We really do not need to let it cool down very long. If at all.
Now, if you want the coolest gauge eva!

I have Water temp, Oil temp, Boost and voltmeter. I want to add an Oil pressure guage too. The Water Temp and Oil temp guages should be mandatory in my opinion. The stock water temp guage reads 2 things, fine......and nuclear. I saw my water temps fluctuate up to 30 degrees and the stock guage never even moved!
Dont waste money of the A/F guage, it wont do ****. The only A/F guages taht are good are widebands, everything else is a waste.

Of all the gauges mentioned, Boost and EGT are probably the most important. Don't waste your money on an A/F gauge, just watch the EGT gauge. The stock Oil and Coolant gauges are fine until you go aftermarket EMS, in which case you'll want to replace them with something very accurate.
