ok how about another variable. how many people run premix. wouldnt that raise the efective octane? i am wondering becouse when i skimped on the pre mix on a tank of premum and got some light detonation at WOT at about 7k. but not now that i got back to my excess amount of pre mix.

Just like any other octane issue, the advantage of high octane is that the boost level of the engine can be raised past the normal knock limit imposed by low octane gas. This allows more fuel to be injected. While the fuel is less powerful, if you can add enough of it, the mass quantity will make up for the lower performance. This is why alcohol drag race cars can make a lot of power - they use less powerful fuel, but they use a whole lot of it.
I don't think your NA would get anything out of the extra octane unless it is in extremely poor condition and has a knocking problem.

N/A's can't burn all the high octane level. It doesn't use (burn) up all of the fuel efficiently, causing carbon build-up and all sorts of nasty gunk. The lowest is always better for N/A's. For the T2, high octane is better. Turbo or supercharged cars need the slower burning fuels to prevent pinging or knocking which is very hard on the apex seals. Slower burning, meaning higher octane.

For my 91 NA, I was using 93 octane gas for it since it seemed to work the best. But, I put in some fuel injector cleaner, filled it up with 87 and she works better than ever.
