Ok guys i remember posting about this last year--but let me tell you now im pissed off with this car.--86 gxl--goddamn brakes (front) squell louder than anything you could ever hear.I have replaced everything on this car and then some when it come to the brakes.Let me begin my story.last year the front right caliper froze up thats when i started hearing this loud *** noise.replaced the caliper and both rotors and pads.The damn noise was still there and louder than ever.I replaced the brake hoses hoping that was it.--Nope.I replaced the pads figuring they sucked.--nope.I replaced the rotors and got another set of pads--tadah--noise was gone for like 2weeks.Came back again.Now i replaced the master cylinder becuase it started leaking,i replaced the preportioning valve for **** and giggles and put a set of brembo cross drilled/slotted rotors and kevlar(green stuff) pads.--guess what same damn thing.yes it has all the shims,all the antisquell crap and i even tapered the pads like some one told me and nothing works.No car on earth should have ear peircing sound that can shatter glass coming from the front.---any ideas on what this could be ----hell--if your the one that can tell me what this is--you got bank coming

 

dude, im willing to bet the bolts you have that bolt the calipers to the hub are not the right ones and they are too long and hit the brake rotor. If im right, you buy me a 12 pack. Good luck

How long was the thing froz up? If it was a long time i have heard of people worping componets aroud the caliper. Just something to look at

 

2 things- What kind of pads did you buy? Cheap-*** off-the-sheft Autozone/Advance Auto/Pep Boys special?

Second thing, did you put the springs back on the pads? That caused mine(the idiot who replaced my rear brakes lost 2 springs, so just used 1 on each side)

 

Just a question. When you're slowing down and the noise is evident, if you hit the brakes hard does the noise stop, or does it continue?

 

Is the noise there even when you are not on the brakes? If so it could be your anti-rattle springs are not pulling the pad off the disk brake while you are not on the brakes. Or it could be that little piece of metal that goes between the piston on the caliper and the brake pad it self, this could be touching the disk. It sounds like you know what your doing and have replaced everthing, so I am not sure. Also with new pads you often get new brake shim kit which will have new pieces of the two items I have just explained.

 

no noise while driving,and ya the first set was a cheap set,but then i replaced them with some wagner semi metallic--i got oem pads from mazda--same thing and i just got the kevlar(grenn stuff)pads.I was told to use these because they are suppose to be some of the best pads out there.and that did nothing.oh ya,if i slow down real easy then its the same if i get on them hard-sqeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuulllll!All shims are in place--some one said springs.there are 2 sets of springs one in the middle and one on the back side and they are all there.

 

Rangerjoe---what could warp?--calipers rotors and pads have been replaced.What kills me is if if i screw around with one side,the noise will go to the other side.

ok, my input might sound stupid, but I had the same problem all my springs and components were present and in working order. But I found that my dust shield was really weak and warped and the bolts holding it on were loose, and when i braked it would cause a loud squeel. Hope you find your problem and it gets solved.

 

what up loud. did you check the wheel bearings. Is it coming from one side or both. If the bearings are bad it would allow the rotor to move when the brakes are applied, and that would definately cause noise.

Are you using the anti squeel goop on the back of the pads and shims between the pistions and the pads. Almost every time I've had a cars brakes squeel this has fixed it.

 

It sounds to me like you have glazed the brake pads. Did you "break in" the pads? After you put the new pads on, you have to go really easy on them for a while to properly bed them in. If you try and use them hard right away, you basically cook the surface of the pads, and you get a glaze. This glazed surface will squeal every time, and will lengthen stopping distances. If you have a flat electric sander, take the pads off, and sand them down a bit to remove the glaze. (wear a dust mask). Put them back on, and then go really easy on them for a day or two. They may squeal at first, but that should dissapear.

This kind of thing can be made worse if you don't clean off the anti rust oil from the rotor with some brake cleaning solution. Give everything in the wheel well a check over to make sure nothing is loose too...

 

This makes it sound like something is hitting the rotor when the weight of the car is lurched forward under hard braking. Check all of your suspension and steering components and make sure they are tight and in proper working order.

If you use the engine to brake, does it squeal?
I mean, if you're driving the car, and you downshift so the rpms get way up there, and the car slows, does it still make the noise? Or is only when you apply the brake? Does it squeal if you try to stop the car by dragging the e-brake?
