What to do with the car now that the engine is toast
So I want some input on what to do here.
I recently bought a 1990 TII from a guy here on the forum( see here
I drove it home, well, part way, when the engine just up and died. White smoke went out the back and then nothing. I towed it home, and have been fooling with it for awhile until I just now ran a compression test on it. 10 psi in the front rotar, 90 in the rear.
The car is cherry like the ad says it is. Paint is great, racing beat exaust, good interior (except drivers seat). Needs a stereo.
If it threw a seal then that means the turbo will have to be replaced too, right (correct me if I'm wrong).
I paid 3000 for it. What should I do?

3000 is a steal for a cherry TII, even if you have to spend 1500+ in getting the engine out of MIA, I would still say it's a fair deal, especially considering it's condition.
In a perfect world, if are squeamish about rebuilding yourself, get a rotary shop to rebuild it for you and treat yourself to a nice streetport .

Well for most people when the motor dies the car is dead to them because they do not see the advantage of re-building or replacing the motor. My advice on what you should do is to ask your self these couple of questions.
- Do you love the car, and don’t want to get rid of it?
- Do you have the resources to have alternative transportation while your car is down for repairs?
- Do you have the funds to do such repairs? Or can you get around until you have the funds?
If you answered yes to these questions then keep the car and repair it. Yes it’s a bummer that the motor let loose but life is never easy. It would probably be best in the long run to have the motor re-built now instead of dumping a used or “Junk”-Spec in the car to get you by.

I say find a used engine and slap it in. Then take your current engine and slowly and methodicly rebuild it. That way you will have a new and complete understanding of the rotary, and you will have a standby engine for when you need it.
Personally, I love my 89. In fact somethimes I'll fill up the oil and zip around the block leaving one heck of a smoke cloud behind me at about 2:00 AM.

I'm in the process of figuring out what I want to do with my 89 TII. Its basically the shell with interior. Custom leather seats....exhuast, all the parts except the engine...I blew it up, and I don't want to put a crappy engine in, I want to do it right...but I'm not really looking forward to dumping aobut 20K into the 89 right now...so I may be parting it out or selling it for an Rx8.

theres no reason to put a 13b-rew in. like dana said, if you have the time and resources, rebuild it. id be a shame to give up on a cherry s5 tII unless it was out of your power.

EDIT to the original poster. What ever you do do not part the TII out. Stop throwing away chasis people! Build it again or sell it as a whole. If you have not seen the production numbers of FCs they are pretty much TINY. There are more RX-8's than ******* S5's.

So what would be wrong with the engine? I read back on what the seller posted and it didn't seem like it should blow the engine driving it.. And what would it have "blown", engine and turbo?

I've decided to go ahead and rebuild it myself. When I bought the car, I made big investments in various things (sterio, ECU, boost gauge). The car is just plain HOT, and my 82 RX-7 still runs great. It just burns a little to be making a monthly car payment on something I can't drive. But I'm in far enough to make me go the whole way.
The new engine is going to have a medium street port, and a new turbo (hybrid or full T04, I'm still learning a lot about turbos). I wanted a fast, fun, newer car when I bought it, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let this cherry slip though my fingers.

Thanks for all the encouragement, it's pretty tough to make this sort of decision. I'm hoping to have the engine out in 2 weeks, and then go from there.
