What the deuce could this be?

Alright, yesterday I was driving to pay the electric bill and I had just left my apartment. The car was running relatively good, only a little hot. I got onto Key Avenue and take it to about 3k in first and it hesitates! Its like a rev limiter. Its floored and when it hits 3k it automatically drops off to about 2k in a matter of a few seconds and does this repetively. I pushed the clutch in and still the same. Its like a rev limiter at 3k. So I pull over, turn the car off, and turn it back on, immediately revving it up to make sure its not doing it and its fine. I'm just wondering if this is an omen of dire trouble to come. Oh, BTW, my car is a '90 GXL which, if I'm not mistaken, used to be an automatic (although I could be wrong). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the secondaries were stuck shut and needed a little kick to get them open?
