How about something like this. Couldn't find a pic I saw weeks ago, but this is close. This pod would sit to the left of the main gauge cluster.

I'd love to see pictures of the grouped MM ears (guages on same side)
what size of gauges can it hold? 52mm? 60mm?

and how would it be installed? on top of the gauge cluster dash or a complete replacement?

The carbon fiber itself is not flammable, but the epoxy/glass matrix can be.

also, Ted, explain "pre-preg" for me?
There are two basic types of carbon fiber parts.
One is "wet lay-up", which uses carbon fiber mat and an epoxy or e-glass/s-glass matrix resin.  It's called wet because you get the CF mat and "paint" the resin onto it - it's very similar to how fiberglass is done.

The other, more expensive, type is "dry lay-up" or "pre-preg" (short for "pre-impregnated").  The CF mat is impregnated with the resin (epoxy only?) matrix and then frozen to stop the final cure.  The stuff needs to be kept cold before using, and final mold is as easy as letting the stuff warm up to ambient temps.  For final set, this stuff should be baked in an autoclave.  Because of the total matrix coverage from the pre-preg process, it is a superior and more expensive method.

Wet lay-up stuff can come close to pre-preg matrix coverage through the use of vacuum bagging, but this adds more cost.

Dave, sign me up for one of these, at this point either regular fiberglass or CF!

I just want one!

and these..

To go with the S5 radio surround, the piece around the logicon done in CF would be a good match!

So let's see, feed lip, radio surround, logicon surround...

It depends on the process, and very heavy epoxy or glass filler will create a really heavy piece.

One of the reasons I refuse to buy a (wet lay-up) CF hood, is that it is not that significantly lighter than the stock aluminum hood.  Paying all that money for just a 5 lbs. weight reduction is not worth in my book.  We made a CF hood for the FC, and we kept the filler a minimum but still managed to break 10 lbs. easy - this had no underhood support, so a proper hood will be heavier.  The stock aluminum hood is around 30 lbs.  I would be willing to pay for a CF hood if it's 15 lbs. or lighter.  I don't think you can hit this number unless you use pre-preg and that gets expensive...

I totally agree with your points. We are having Fiber Images make the hoods for this, among other reasons. They are alot stronger, lighter, and are much higher quality than just about anyone's hoods on the market.

BTW, nice to see you Ted (so to speak I guess...not really seeing you) I like what you are doing with the other thread on the FC parts. Very interesting things there I'm actually following that thread closely to see what kinds of cool things you might come out with.

The gauge holes come filled, so you would cut them to whatever size you needed. This allows for a mix of 52mm or 60mm or 2 of each. We were going to make them precut, but since everyone does different things, and makers like Run Racing and RE leave them blank as well, we decided to follow suit. The MM ears pods are covers that use 3M double sided tape for installation.

We can do a FEED lip no problem. I just need a donor to do the tooling.

vaughnc graciously lent us his MM ears to do the tooling off of, which in the end were just models to mold next to. They are made for RHD, so the back of them that goes next to the defronster vents was the wrong shape. Anyway, if anyone has parts to donate to tooling in exchange for a replacement in CF let me know and we'll see what we can do.

Dave, I have a feed replica lip in Sacramento that I'm not using at all right now, I'm willing to loan it to you. Let's talk. We just need to find a way to get it down to you. =)

Actually a Idiot cluster replacement would look pretty cool.

Maybe mold in a side pod on it so you can still see that your car is not blowing up.

That's really similar to what I'm making. Mine is currently made of bondo and a hard playdough stuff though since I am making the mold.

The playdough stuff is actually pretty good for making molds. It is pliable but in 24 hours hardens to a nice shell you can shave with a razor blade.

How about some CF petals that fit really well over the existing petals...shift ****...ebrake handle...sunroof panel...armrest assembly...demister grills and other vents...instrument surround...rear view mirror assembly...side view mirrior assembly...and why not ask for something hard---CF doors and hatch...intake manifolds and intake piping(I've seen this on race cars)...that all i can think of for now!

Nah, it's nice to actually see this thread, as it takes away a lot of the stuff people want (CF/FRP stuff), but I can't delivery economically.  People don't look at my location that it says "HAWAII".

It's been a while since FC owners got a little excited about new products, so I started that other thread to see what demand was out there.  I welcome your input and this thread as the FC owners will win out with quality products!

I ain't going to deny there's an underlying reason for starting these types of threads, but if there are people willing to build quality products for our FC's, I think we'll all win out.  Not only does this help out with product development, but it also gives others an idea of what can be made and sold!

Good luck!

imagine the whole car being CF..... hood, bumpers, fenders, doors, etc. + CF inside - might not be the most practical, but would be very nice

maybe its kinda overdone - but who doesnt like how CF looks?
