it vents boost after you let off the gas.

It lets excess boost out when the you let go of the throtle so that the turbo won't try to spin backwards.

I believe BOVs also help to linearize the torque curve as well. Correct me if I am wrong.

It sould only open when there is a pressure difference befor and after the TB. so I dont see how that would work.

but after you get on gas again is where it makes the difference.

if the boost is trapped in the intake system, or slowing the compressor, when you apply throttle again, your torque curve will be effected.

If using the stock computer, it's actually a downgrade, but it makes cool noises so people put it on their car anyway. The TurboII comes stock with a bypass valve, which is a BOV that vents back to the turbo rather than to the atmosphere. Were it to vent to the atmosphere, the engine would run rich when the valve activates because it would be letting out air metered by the car's computer, and the computer would add fuel for air that is no longer there. It wouldn't hurt anything, but it causes a little bit of hesitation or stumbling when changing gears. Cars with an aftermarket fuel computer or engine management system can use a BOV with no ill effects, and a large aftermarket BOV is a common item found on engines with highly modified turbo systems that work better with something larger than the stock bypass valve.

Only a turbo or supercharged car can have one. Non-turbo cars run on a vacuum, so a BOV would suck in air, not blow it out, which not only wouldn't make any noise except for a really stupid sucking sound, but it would also suck unfiltered air into the engine.

Is the bypass valve that black thing connects to the TID and the pipe going to the intercooler?

Oh and one more. Is that where you would install the BOV if you are replacing the bypass valve.
