I recently purchased a 87 N/A with 78xxx miles on her. I intend to do a full Turbo II swap as time and money allows. I'm not really doing it for weight savings, or anything like that, just more or less because the car was a good deal, and I don't have the money to afford a Turbo II at this point, although I see the benefits of having a Turbo II. I purchased the car as a project car, and as a secondary driver, so if it sits for a month at a time, its no big deal to me, its just for fun, and a learning experience. I will most likely drive the car N/A for a little while before converting the car over entirely. I think this will provide me wiht a learning experience as I dive into the world of RX-7's. I've accumulated some of the parts for the swap, and have't spent too much at this point. I've gotten some good deals, and actually got some free parts. Its entirely up to you as the owner though, everyone has the choice to spend their money as they see fit.

Well the TII swap isn't hard..... Nor all that expensive if your creative and patient.

I bought my 88 N/A SE... drove it until it threw an apex seal....

I checked into a rebuild but it was cheaper to do a transplant... I now have a total of $1750 into the new engine, exhaust, hood and other small parts....

I did the 5 lug conversion 1 1/2 years ago for $150 with LSD so I could get more rubber and nicer rims then the phone dials I had...

Th only thing I now need is the TII Tranny, LSD, Driveshaft and half shafts

So I now have about $4000 tied up into my car over 2 years... All the work done by me and the satisfaction of the job and still less then a good TII.

I would have loved to have bought a TII to start with, but the funding and availability said no.... Due to a blown engine I now have almost a TII without power windows, door locks, rear wiper and sunroof....

It is also insured as a N/A 2+2

I am happy and don't gibe a happy damn about anyone telling me what I did was wrong or that it didn't make sense....

Do what you think is right.... I do believe I am better off having started with the N/A which is simpler and has less power to learn with prior to starting the conversion to a TII...

I sold my 88 TII for $2K. It had a good engine that works to this day, it had all the standard TII items like the heavy-duty drivetrain that you do not have right now, and it had a custom exhaust, HKS intake, Center Force Dual Friction performance clutch, aftermarket Auto Meter Ultra Lite boost gauge, Racing Beat fuel cut defenser, Racing Beat variable boost controller, and new radiator, alternator, shifter bushings, Interstate battery, and clutch slave cylinder and hose. The new owner drove the car away after the sale, with no need to change out the engine or suspension like you did. How in the world do you figure that spending $4K and a lot of time on your car was a good idea?

FYI, my car was for sale at Ft. Bragg, but I guess you missed it.

All of the coupe RX-7's from 79-92, regardless of turbo or NA, are the same PIP/liability insurance rate with USAA, State Farm, and Progressive. I would imagine that the others insurance carriers also rate them the same. The only difference is that if you have full coverage, you would only get the Blue Book value of an 88 SE as opposed to the higher Blue Book value of a TII.

Good, because what you did didn't make sense, at least not financially. However, if you like turning wrenches, then I'm sure it was worth it to you as a hobby.

I paid a lot for my T2, $5k, but it had 58k miles, no rust, new tires, greddy power extreme exhaust, and was very clean and well maintained. You just have to look around and be prepared to spend a few bucks for a nice one.

you COULD supercharge your N/A but then you would need TII stuff anyways...(like drivetrain, brakes, fuel system, etc...)

what kind of impact on insurance would supercharging have? would they(state farm) deny a claim because I (if I) supercharged my car?
