Well I did it bought my first RX-7

found a car that had been siting in this guys driveway for about 2 years . asked a cuple of times if he would sell and he said no! stoped by last week and he gave in and i bought the car.for $200 .He said he drove the car to work one day did fine and at lunch it would not crank the motor just locked up? well as per the dealer of course , a new motor . my question is does a rotary really lock up like this ? i bought the car knowing it needed a motor but this just does not sound right does it??/

Welcome to the club. Read all you can for the next two weeks or so, using search to study up on anything specific. Read the FAQ's. Read, read, read...

Yes, they can lock up. Apex seal jam, coolant leak (rust), lack of oil (bearings), all kinds of fun stuff...Might as well read up on rebuilding the little monster, too, lol...

How many miles are on it? It not cranking could mean a lot of things. I wouldn't jump to the conclusion of it being locked up yet.

pull out both leading spark plugs (bottom 2). Put some ATF ora uto transmission fluid using a small hose (clear). Just put a couple of spoon full on each rotor and leave it for a day or 2.. some manual turning of the motor will help spread the ATF around the chamber. The ATF will loosen up some carbon build up.. The car will smoke for a while until the ATF burns off. I hope it helps!...good luck and have fun with the RX. This are cool cars and very reliable if you really take care of it!.. WELCOME to the CLUB!

does it have oil pressure? because that would rule out it being locked up by definition...
that also means that its carbon deposits, jammed apex seal, etc... unless its the tranny... does it roll in neutral?
