weird sputtering problem

I have a kinda weird problem on my 88n/a 5 speed. When you try to hold the RPM's at a certain point (does it at any RPM) like when you are trying to hold the same speed on a flat road, or if you are sitting still and you just rev up the engine and try to hold it at a certain RPM. The car will start to sputter and the RPMs will drop. The car idles and accelerates fine. I checked for trouble codes and I noticed i am getting the code for a bad oxygen sensor. But would a bad oxygen sensor cause that problem? I just noticed the code today but it could have been bad for awhile. Anyone think the two are related? Anyone know what the problem could be? thanks
