weird ignition key problem...any possible fix.

ok, today i was replacing my crapy exhaust hangers and after that my brother start the car to see how the exhaust sounded like. it sounded much better, no rattling anymore. the thing is, je somehow just pulled the key out (accident or not, no idea). the car was still running, like the key never left the ignition. i thought he was joking and i tried it to make sure. the key comes out! i'll try not to bump the key with my knee when i drive,

is there some mechanism in the ignition that is broken to allow this to happen? anyone else every had this problem. ways to fix it?

My car does this too, and so did several earlier GM cars I have owned. I really don't think of it as much of a problem. I think it gives my car character

That is OK, it happens to old locks. The only things you can do is replace the ignition switch, or have it rebuilt by a locksmith, or live with it. Nothing happens if it comes out of the ignition while the engine is running.
