Weird ABS problem
Weird ABS problem
Guys,
I have an '89 TII with 46,000 miles. It's 100% OEM.
This morning the ABS self check (a hissing sound as you start moving for the first time)ran for much longer than normal. Then, when I came to a very gentle stop at the end of my street, the ABS came on (pedal started pulsing). This was from a very slow speed on totaly dry pavement. Same thing happened again when I stopped the next time...and again at the drive thru at McDonalds
. After a run down the interstate to work, the brakes seemed to work normally again. Anybody got any idea what could be wrong. I suspect the car may need brake pads (the original pads are still on the car). Not sure why the pads would cause the ABS to activate though. I also have 4 new tires with less than 2000 miles on them (no low tires, etc. to activate the ABS). I DID wash the car last night so something may have gotten wet...but again...don't think that should have activated the ABS. The ABS light did not come on during any of this.
Thanks for help.

its fine... it was most likely still doing a self check...maybe the sensors had moisture condensen on them
who knows...
next time its raining out side... go find an empty road and mash on the breaks and see if the ABS is really working properly.
Damn i wish my TII had 46,000 miles on her

I'm still having problems with this sporadically. Now, sometimes the ABS light will come on when the car is started and stay on. Sometimes everything works fine. Sometimes the ABS will activate for no reason. Still experiencing the problem above on and off. I replaced the front pads, will replace the rear and inspect the sensors tomorrow. Anybody ever experience this? Any way to read ABS codes?

I don't believe there is any equipment to read the codes except for the dealer's. I would check the gap and clean the wheel sensors with brake cleaner. Be sure the engine ground is good. When mine was new @ 3500 miles I got the ABS light. Dealer installed new ABS computer, still the light....Found it to be a loose ground.
This same thing happened once in a while with my TII. After fretting about it, I checked the ABS on a rain-soaked parking lot and the car stopped straight and true, with the ABS working perfectly. I'm currently redoing the grounds in my car, so when I drive it again at the end of April (engine and sundry items will be in), I hopefully won't have that problem.
