weedwacker noise

I thought that description referred to the buzzing 2-cycle engine noise, but driving down the road lately I've been hearing this whipping whizzing noise that's best described as a weedwacker's business end cutting through thickets. It changes with the engine's rpms.

My 88 vert is about as stock as they come, with the exception of a Bonez hi-flo cat.

It's starting to bug me because I'm driving a lot now with the top and windows down. Now that the noise caught my attention, is this the weedwacker noise that people here have been referring to?? Can something be done about it?

check your air pump, acv, and split air pipe connections. Those damn air pump exhaust parts can cause funny sounds...ive heard Moo's, to whistling on decel (my 'vert with a bad acv), to roaring on acceleration from a hose being off.

maybe you've got a hole or crack in your exhaust system somewhere. the stock exhaust sound is pretty low key.

I'd say you've just got an exhaust leak somewhere, i've got a leak in my exhaust and it does exactly what you're describing. You might need new gaskets if an exhaust shop put on that cat. The shop i went to used paper gaskets in my exhaust and they vaporized.
