Sounds like you have an exhaust leak. What is the exhaust like? Stock, aftermarket? Basically, you just get a new gakset for the bad joint and that should fix it. Unless the flange is warped, which is possible with a cheap-o aftermaket system.

Yeah sounds like an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifold. Get a new gasket and slap it on, and hear the difference =)

Rotary are suppose to be loud! lol

If you haven't visually inspected your cats yet... Do it... I had an 86 where my cat actually rusted/burned a hole in the thing.... the ceramics had clocked the hole exiting the cat, so it had to come out somewhere else... that made a LOUD noise.

I hope you got your exhaust fixed. I have a 87 na I replaced the gasket on and had the manifold plained to make sure it was flush and the damn thing still leaks at the top of the manifold I even put on a spare manifold and it still does it.

I hope yours goes much smoother.

I just spent 4 hours doing my exhaust on my vert because the system that was on it had a leak. Well, after 4 hours and finally getting hte exhaust on with no leaks, we discovered it was the exhaust manifold from the start.

So, how much fun am I going to have replacing the manifold gasket?

Eh... PB Blast the thing a couple days in advance if possible.. let it sit... It won't be bad if you do that...

Schmol...
The exhaust manifold gasket is straight foward.
If you have an NA, the haynes manual says you need to remove the auxiliary port actuators and the air control valve. Bypass that step and save yourself some time! You dont need to remove those componants to get the manifold off!

It helps to have a long socket extension.
