Water Temp Sensors - which one for what?

ok, so there's quite a few water temp sensors in the engine, now which one does what? i'm getting all confused and mixed up

there's one on the bottom of the radiator, one on the water pump housing, one on the driver side of the block... not sure if there's any more

so... what's the purpose of each one of them?

Okay, the one on the water neck is for the ECU, thats the Water Thermo Sensor. Its for controlling the AWS and the mixture.

The one on the Radiator is the Water Switch. Also for the ECU. Not sure what that controls, but I imagine its for the same thing.

Last one is the Temp sending unit. This is for your temp gage.

The one on the bottom of the radiator that goes to the ECU is for the seventeen second start up when cold. If the water is above a certain degree, the seventeen second, three grand startup does not happen. On a 86/88 anyway.

it's a good idea if you're getting bad mileage as it seems some of them are related to AF mixture. I had mine done when I first got the car...

I got a code 09 "water thermo sensor error" after replacing the water pump.
The plug connector had backed out of the plastic when I reinstalled it.
It ran like **** until I fixed it yesterday..

Well, they are 15yrs old for one. I take overheating that seriously. So I want reliable Sensors that won't quit on me on demand. A bit of an overkill I'd say.

Although not as comparible to a stock fan, I have an electrical Black Magic Fan. Also, aftermarket Water Temp. Gauge, 1.5 bottles of Redline Waterwetter and flushout Coolant EVERY Spring.

It seems to me, I have a Water fetish.

I have been contemplating the Black Magic Fan ...
Why do you state not comparible to stock ... and
you have after market gage to prove diff ... ???
Are you running any type of shroud ??

I'm running the Included shroud. Really, the stock fan Is sufficient. Cools plenty. The only reason why I run an EF Is b'c It freed up the engine bay and power. My temps are the same but really wasn't worth It. Although a neat fan If you elect to buy one.

Not right. The ECU's thermosensor is on the back of the water pump housing, not the filler neck. On S4's there is a temp switch for the stock electric fan on top of the filler neck. On S5's this switch is on the back of the water pump housing next to the ECU thermosensor.

Last night I got an 09 code off of my car...can this 09 water thermo sensor cause my car to hesitate (sometimes it feels like fail-safe when this happens.)? I don't even have to be accelerating really and it will just lose power momentarily. Thanks.

On your series four, that means that the plug has fallen off the sensor or there is an opening in the wiring to the ECU. Online manual at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com go to the fuel section and look for the water thermo sensor. Then put the plug back on the sensor on the back of the water pump. Also ohm it out from the ECU plugs. Specs in the Fuel Section at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com. Just look at the FUEL SECTION of the 88 manual at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com

On S5's this switch is on the back of the water pump housing next to the ECU thermose

Now I know what that extra harness socket is for..
