I have an '86 and it also has that hole on the thermostat housing, but nothing to go in there. The stock temp sender is on the drivers side rear housing, below the oil pressure sensor.

FC's have up to six temp sensors! The hole you're talking about is for the temp switch that activates the optional supplemental electric fan. If you don't have the fan, you won't have the sensor.
FYI, the ECU's coolant sensor is on the back of the water pump housing under the alternator, the temperature gauge's sensor is on the rear plate under the oil filter, and there's a temp switch on the LHS of the bottom radiator tank that's part of the emission controls. The sensor on top of the radiator is the coolant level switch for the warning light cluster. There's also two air temp sensors; one in the AFM, the other in the intake manifold (NA) or TB (turbo).
