Water temp sender for the STOCK location??

ok, I've done tons of searching, and I am aware of all of the "good" places to drill and tap for an aftermarket temp gauge. here's the thing, i just don't wanna do all that. my question is this:

Is there any aftermarket water temp sender that will ABSOLUTELY fit in the STOCK location of a S5 TII block without modification?

if somebody could point me to a gauge that will work or better yet, the 100% true thread size/type of the stock S5 TII temp sender.

thanks for the help.

I'm looking to buy this gauge:

as long as I can confirm it will fit in the stock location.

cool, thanks. dou you have a link for the one you are talkin about?

the thread size i've seen for autometer gauges is 1/8 NPT.

can anyone confirm that that is the thread size of the stock sender?

1/8npt is not the thread size for s4 blocks. not sure what your block has. actually, i have two different sizes for s4 blocks....... so who knows which years/blocks had what threads. take your stock sensor to a machine shop and ask what size it is. you dont want to order a gauge and the sender doesnt fit as intended.

i ordered a megan racing gauge. the new defi style that are tinted. in my first s5 t2 block it fit perfect. in my next s5 t2 block (both were j-specs) it didn't fit and stripped the threads off the sender. so it's a toss up.

As far as I know, there is no sensor on the aftermarket that will fit the stock block. It's either a straight metric thread, or a British pipe thread. However AutoMeter sells adapters for both, so if you can find out what thread your block has then you can buy the appropriate adapter.

You shouldn't use thread adaptors on coolant temp sensors as they will space the sensor backwards, moving it out of the coolant flow and seriously slowing it's response time.

The only way I've seen to do it properly is to drill a hole and properly thread it.

the first 1/8" NPT sensor i installed into an S5 fit without modification but the next i tried was too snug so i had to get out the NPT tap and tap out the threads a little, no drilling required.

i am wondering if there is some rebuilders out there using NPT taps to clean up the S5 sensor threads, only explanation i can think of.

you can put a 1/8" NPT sensor in an S4 in the stock location but it does require drilling since the S4 uses a smaller sensor than S5 does.

Yeah, but the original poster really wants to install his sensor in the stock location, so it's either an option of drilling an tapping, or using an adapter.

Considering that there are a number of links in the FAQ detailing exactly how and where to install a temp sender, I'm surprised that the original poster is picking the stock location in the first place...

well he has an S5, installing a 1/8" NPT sender there is the easiest place to install one IMO.

I (being the original poster) simply wanted to make the install as easy as possible. next time I have the engine out or need to change a water pump I would have no problem dilling for a better/different location.

I'll try the stock location and if it doesn't work out then I'll cross that bridge when I get to it

thanks for all the info

There is one other option. You can get an adapter that inserts into a radiator hose that has a fitting for a temp sensor in it. BUT it will not tell you if you're overheating due to a broken thermostat. ISC sells one for $25, you can probably find them elsewhere too.

I dunno what exactly what you're trying to do, but the temp sensor in the back of the water pump is NOT for the gauge in your instrument cluster.

The sensor for the gauge in your cluster is right under the oil filter pedestal.
This sensor is 1/8"BSP-28.
Yes, it's very close to a 1/8"NPT-27, but it's not exact.
I don't know of any aftermarket temp sensor that might fit that thread type...maybe some really off-the-wall UK brand like Lucas???

The sensor in the back of the water pump is for the stock ECU.
So if you're still running the stock ECU, you NEED that sensor.
For an S5 that has the extra sensor, it's (I think) a thermoSWITCH for the electric fan?

Placed my water temp sensor in this location going up to the TB and it works great, no drilling req'd.

Wouldn't one in the stock location have the highest temp in the engine though since its farthest back in the engine bay and is on the combustion side of the engine?
