Water spray cooling for radiator......

Ok I know that it has been discussed before but does anyone have a setup that uses nozzles to spray water in a fine mist over the front of the radiator to help cool. I realized how much it would help when i touched my new rad. after about 20 min. of being dried off and it was cool to the touch. I would probably only use it under extreme conditions like 100MPH for 10 min. straght or something like a drag strip night between runs. Not to mention it gets over 100 degrees here very often.

You could use a windshield washer tank & pump with a mist spray irrigation nozzle.
In dry climates it really knocks down the heat.
This has also been done for IC's.

depending on how long you wanna run it they sell those co2 fogger things on ebay for intercoolers which might help... only thing i could think of is it might make it too cold....

maybe just get some water wetter and see if that helps... i have a friend with an mr2 turbo who uses it now and says hes about 10 degrees cooler constantly

those windshield washer setups are nice, you can use them from anything like applying windshield washer, to cooling down your radiator to spraying cars behind you with whatever nasty mixture you can make run through the tubes, great for when someone pisses you off in trafic :]

I don't really need it. I was just bored and decided to explore this option. I may try it if I ever get an anftermaret temp guage. For now my temp stays at about 1/5 of the guage what a good radiator can do for your cooling eh.

Couldnt the water make your radiator hotter potentially? Kinda like when its really humid outside it feels hotter because there is more moisture in the air.

Well the way I intend for it to work is as the myst evaporates it takes some of the heat with it. Like your sweat does after running. It would only be used at speed via a switch or button.

Hey I have a spare rear wiper bottle from my GXL. I could try that.

but think if you stick your hand out the window on a hot day... now dip your hand in water and stick it out the window (while you're driving, of course)...

if the rad's hot enough, the water will turn into steam, in a sense transferring heat into the atmostphere...

the question is would this make a big difference?

i think it would when you take hot metal and dorp it or spray water on it it cools almost immediately. just wonder though what stress would constant heating and sudden cooling have ton the fins where the spray was concentrated. It definatly would help cool down the radiator but not for very long. I guess at a track where youre waiting on line with you hood open for the next run a lil water on the rad should help cool it a lil quicker. but i cant see it helping under sconstant driving conditions.

Yeah it is not meant for constant use. Maybe 10 min. at most.

You do know that water is added weight right...

For the small amount of cooling it wouldnt be worth it to me to have a gallon of water under my hood. But then again you could just bring the water with you if you go to a track and run it through when youre not racing.

Yeah it is only meant for track drag usage. I am planning on putting a fresh air inlet into my air box so the wiper fluid is getting relocated so I may just try and make a larger tank for it.

I was toying around with the idea of putting something like that on the intercooler.

I really like the idea of spraying co2 onto the IC to ice it down between runs, it should really help fight the heat soak the crappy top mount experiences after a few hard drag runs.

The reason it would work is because when water, or anything, eveaproates, it cools down what it is evaporating from. that is why we sweat. The reason it seems hotter on a humid day is because the water isn't evaporating. that is why doggs pant. they don't sweat so the heat had to go somewhere.
Reguardless of what speed you were traveling, or the humidity during the day, there would be some benifit.
It couldn't hurt to try. Just don't spray too much water.
did you know that the boiling point is considerably lower with rubbing alcohol? you would see better results with that. make a 50/50 mix of alcohol and water. then dip a rag in it. light it on fire. the rag doesn't burn. the water won't let it. Mr Wizard.

I think it'd be worth it on an IC, but definitely not a radiator. If your car is running right and the cooling system is good, then you shouldn't have any problems with overheating unless you're going up a hill with the ac on at redline.
You'd be better off routing the windshield sprayers to to back so you can spray something at tailgaters.

If I leave my car running with my e-fan going the needle will eventually drop off the bottom of the gauge in a 30C day. Waste of time, money and weight IMO.

there is no reason why you would need a water spray at 100+ mph, the amount of air that is flowing through the rad at that moment is more than enough to cool it down, thats whay electric fans turn off when you get on the free way and turn on when your sitting at a stop light, if you really wanted to you could get one of the C02 sprayer kits on ebay, and hook it up to an adjustable thermostad so it will only turn on when temps reach the critical point
