Manual tranny 86-88 GXLs will have a clutch type LSD with a 4.1 rear end gear.

My 'Vert has a vLSD installed, and it takes some spin before it locks up, but it is more eager to lock (In my experience) and is more useful in regular street driving, and unlike the clutch type, it won't wear out and need a rebiuld.

The open diff is worthless :P

If you are really desperate, you can always just weld the spider gears in your open diff and have a totally locked diff. Great for drag. Terrable for street/drift/anything else :p

All US 'verts are N/A with an open diff.
The S4 'verts got another kick in the teeth with 3.9:1 ratio gears.

you can get it to lock in snow/ice easily

apply the brake or pull up the e-brake and try again when it would only spin 1 tire.....

what kind of rear end would be best for street racing and handling corners? the LSD? is the 4.1 gear bigger or smaller than my factory 1991 coupe rear end gear?

I'm not sure but I think the 4.1 rear end is the same as what you have now, but dont qoute me on that I'm not 100% sure. One thing is for sure lsd is the best way to go for handling corners. Open Diffs. plan suck and not much more to say about them. I was planning on getting a viscous lsd from a GTUs but I might just wait and get a torsen from a miata it should be a lot better. I'm still debating but why spend the money on a viscous lsd now when eventually I'll change it to something better?

id say just use the GTUs rearend. i has the higher 4.3 gear. and sometimes LSD is LSD. that or you could swap just the gears...
