love these videos
have a few quesitons though
this is something i would love to do when im older and can afford it .. but time to play 20 questions
- whats your average speed on the track?
-whats the top speed?
-its obviously an all out race car, how much would you say goes into a car like that
-how much does it cost to be in a race series like that? (entry fees, tire costs, general repairs and maintainence etc?)
-how long is the average race?
-how did you get started in this?

Hi guys,
Ok, the class of racing is Pro Sedan within the NASA racing organization, Improved Touring in SCCA. The 2nd gen RX-7 NA is classed in ProSedan 1 (ITS in SCCA)
The hondas are all in the Honda Challenge group, so they have significant rule differences. The really fast ones pretty much have no weight minimums, so they can get their cars as light as they want, which lets them move really quick.
As for the list of questions
- Average speed was around 67mph IIRC
- Top speeds are inferred (since I don't have a working speedometer), but Buttonwillow doesn't have super long straights like Thunderhill, so at the 3-4 shift, I'm doing roughly 102-106 mph. I don't accelerate much beyond that so I'd guess topping out at 110. I might get to 115 at T-hill.
- Total cash into the car ready to race was in the 13K range. It definitely can be done cheaper.
- I budget 700 per race for entry fees, hotel, food, gas, and tires. Wear and tear maintenance items (like rebuilding my tranny!) is on top of that.
- Average race is 35 minutes long. You get two races a weekend, with separate warmup and qualifying for each race. There are 5 or so endurance races I could enter that are anywhere from 3 hours to 25 hours long. The costs for those races are significantly higher.
- How did I get started? Auto-x. I did that a couple of times, then heard about open tracking, where I could take my car to the track and run it around. I did that for 3 years with my Trans Am. Around the 2nd year, I watched a race, and I was hooked. My RX-7 had suffered a pulsation dampner fire, and was just sitting in my driveway, so I tore it down and built it up as a road race car.
Glad you enjoyed the vids, if you have any other questions let me know.
