Vibrations, and not good ones.

I had a vibration somewhere in the drive line. I was told it was bad ujoints. And as we know we need to replace the drive shaft to replace the ujoints... Ok new drive shaft.

Well the new drive shaft didnt do it. The vibration is better but still very present. I cant tell if its in my transmision or in the rear end. Is there another likely canidate as to where this vibration is coming from?

Im afraid its in may be the tranny cause at the local 1/8th mile I couldnt get it into 2nd until I came to a complete stop. And later i had to kill the engine so I could put it into 1st.

Any Ideas?

i would say...bad differential mounts..or would it be mount..dont know if there are one or two. anyway...that or maybe tranny mounts.

The fact you said that you couldnt get it in second til complete stop..and once had to shut motor down to get into first..sound sto me like a clutch job..but it seems like this would be a on going problem not something that happened once..maybe hydro flid is low in the clutch..or tranny fluid is low.

just some F.Y.I you arent supposed to put it in first til below 5 mph..which it pretty much a stop...

good luck

If the vibration frequency changes with road speed, look at tranny back to wheels. If it changes with engine speed, look at tranny forward. My guess is, it's the clutch.

If you are having a hard time getting the car into gear you are probably having a problem with: A. Throw out bearing (I don't think that's the case here) or B. Your bell housing is not meeting the engine right! Have you inspected the tranny at all yourself? The fact that you are having a hard time getting the car in gear and are having this vibration means it's 99% not your rear end! My advice: check your transmission mounts, and make sure your bell housing is properly torqued to the engine! I'm willing to bet that'll solve your problem. If it doesn't my guess is the following: warped flywheel, bent clutch fork, or bad throw out bearing. Check what you can visually before you drop you're tranny (DUH!). If you have more ?'s or want to add some more details...

thanks for the help Im thinking its the rear end now. i changed the clutch a few months ago and it all seems to be bolted up ok still. Fluid levels seem ok. So I guess it is the rear end.

Now my question is Can a T2 rear end be swapped in place of the NA one? Or will I need another drive shaft and axles too? I wont be surprised about the axles.

Also does anyone know a good place to get one? The local salvage yards here don't seem to have any T2's that havent been raped already for parts.

Thanks again for your help.

If i were you I would get the rear end you have rebuilt..if that is the problem. The T2 rearend is stronger than the N/A rear end. I dont know how much the rear end cost to get rebuilt but a new one will cost you a lot. I believe the N/A rear end can be swapped into the T2 you would have to change some parts out.
hope that helps.

My bad i misuderstood you...

I thought you gad a TII(car) hence having the TII rear end.
It looks like you have a N/A and want a stronger (TII)rearend.
So then just switch everything around in my last post to make it make since. Sorry for the f@^k up.

No problem

Yes I eventually plan on having a complete T2 drive train. So if I need to replace things then I might as well replace them the way Im going to want it in the future.

Now the search begins for a T2 donor.......
