Well I went to the track tonight. Did very shitty. Like a second off what I was hoping for. I only ran 2 times but my best was like almost a 16 flat.

The good news:

1. My car only has an intake
2. The rear tires are showing metal
3. My first time racing at all
4. Track wasn't using "warning lights" It was just wait for the green
5. I left everything in my car and had half a tank


The bad:

1. I am the best driver I know

Is something definitely wrong with my car or what? I know I am seeing the right boost or very close to it but will find out for sure when I get my boost gauge. My tires won't even make any noise when I "spin out" because there is like no tread at all. Just wondering if my car is fucked up or something.

 

that is honestly about right for your car, i would guess. i wouldnt say that was wise racing on tires where the wires were showing. please dont do that again. i dont wanna read how you smashed your 7 to bits. good job though man. my best is in my sig, without the shifter installed at the time.

Yep in a TII. I am in FL. I have no idea the elevation, I guess close to sea level. My car just isn't cutting it. Only thing I can say is my tires really really suck. I can't really take off good at all. I didn't get a slip because it was Friday and theres a ton of people so they try to rush things around.

 

Did you see your trap speed?

Do you still have your Cats?

I'd be willing to bet it was your tires. Without decent traction, you can run up way slower than the car's potential (I've done it).

 

Post your time slip so we could analize it and try to help ya...

 

Well, if you can give it full gas in 1st gear and they don't spin once you are moving , then they may be affecting your time via the launch, but not by a full second by any means.
But if you have to feather 1st gear to get traction once you are moving - then the tires are definatly holding you back.

Definatly check boost- something seems wrong there.
Doesn't the stock gauge work?

What rpm were you launching at- and what technique?

Maybe your cat is clogged.
Check compression.
Your boost should be 5-6 psi min with an intake.

Oh- and about the "bad news"?- You don't know me!!

I didn't get a timeslip because it was a Friday night but I will go back and get one at one point. I know I am a pretty good driver, I mean I drove my friends cars that I never ever drive and get better times than the owners. Just seemed like the car wasn't that fast. I know the tires messed me up some, hopefully half a second at least. The stock gauges goes up to where it is supposed to but I will find out what psi when my boost gauge is hooked up. I was launching from like 4k and pretty much dropping the clutch. Man I lost to a hooked up civic, I was beating him and in 3rd gear he caught up for some reason. Oh and yes I still have my cats.

 

You can cconvert the stock boost guage reading to PSI. Take the number and add a zero at the end. (40 will become 400hg)

My guess is that you are running 35-40 on the stock boost guage which is 6.7-7.7 psi. You have an intake so that is why you are higher than stock.

You should be seeing 35-40 on the guage. if you are way lower than your cats are clogged or something is just silly.

 

No I am seeing just below 40 on the stock gauge. I don't know whats up though. Think I should get a compression check?

 

Well, if you are boosting fully, then your shouldn't have a restriction in the exhaust or intake, and your wastegate isn't messed up, so don't look there.
Boost would be down quite a bit with a clogged cat wouldn't it?

OK- tires could acount for some time off the launch, maybe .3 sec at most- like I said, if you can give it full throttle once moving, and they don't break free, they aren't affecting things that much.
Also- if you beat the civic off the line and through 1st, your lauch is at least normal.

I would do an internal engine cleaning- with ATF or (my favorite) carb cleaner through a vacuum line... maybe find some lost compression.

How long have you had the car?

Suggestions-

Maybe the twin scroll crap isn't working?
Definately do a regular tune up (timing, TPS, etc)

Next- I would do a quick check to see if the ignition system is functional- your trailings are firing.. duh....

Also Check your fuel system- You could have a very clogged fuel filter, or clogged injectors, bad fuel pump/regulator....
Maybe take a voltmeter reading off the o2 sensor when you are driving- that'll at least give you a ballpark figure as to if your fuel mixture is WAY off, but not much closer.

You definatly should be running 15's.

If you have a compression tester- check the compression! That'll tell everything if it's bad, and save a lot of time checking other menaingless crap.

Well I am going to just change the fuel filter and the fuel pump with a walrbo one. I just changed the oil and spark plugs, possibly I need new wires? I am ordering some drag radials so that should help my time alot I am hoping. Do you think I should do the ATF trick? I mean I have heard of it messing some stuff up so I dunno if I wanna do it. I just got the car and the engine was rebuilt like 6 months ago but not my the local rotary expert so I am not sure it was a good rebuild. Who knows what new parts they put in there. I don't know, I figure once I get new tires I will be alot closer to a normal time. Just didn't have much to work with and only went 2 times since my tires were so bad. Only thing that bothers me is that the civic caught up to me. Well I am shifting at redline everytime, should I go farther or less or what?


Oh and the track is in Bradenton, it only takes like 30 mins to get to and its an open track alot of times. I can tell you how to get there if you want.

 

I say the biggest improvement you can make to the car
is to get a good flowing exhaust system

Get the corksport cat back $289


and a 3 In RB DP and the rest can be custom made


that alone gives 50+ HP

don't dump the clutch.. start engaging the clutch@6000RPM at the tree you will feel want to move when the last yellow light hit's
Let go of the clucth pedal and hold the gas where it is
then 2 secs later punch it all the way

 

I'll try that method next time. And next time I will have my spare and jack out and some Nitto Drag Radials I just ordered Hoping to break in the 15s with that stuff. Also going to change the fuel filter. I love how that corksport exhaust looks and the price is great but I have to have a dual setup, its one of the reasons I love 2nd gen rx7s. Well anyways I would get the 3" Dp and MP from corksport but I need to get my fuel taken care of first.

 

You need to practice!
If it makes you feel any better, I ran a 16.20 the first time I tried.
Three weeks later I was down to a 14.10...
It's not as easy as you think...

I'd get those tires replaced - showing wires is NOT a good thing.

I am working on the tires, lol. I bought the Nitto Drag Radials that are on sale for $65 shipped. They left today and will be here in 3-4 business days, which should be just in time for the track on thursday. I dunno, I guess the tires could help but see, I got a 14.1 in my friends vr4 that just has an intake. The best he got in his own car was 14.33 so I know I am a decent driver. Could be that AWD though

 

What was the temperature? Its been freaking hot as hell here this week, makes my car slower than normal.

Anyone can dump the clutch at 6kRPM and launch an AWD vehicle.&nbsp It's a bit trickier to launch a RWD car that has very little torque down low with a turbocharger!

The first and only time I went to the track in my TII, I ran a 16 flat. It was about 90 degrees out and humid as hell. I definitely felt a lack of power and the boost gauge did not move up as high as it usually did.

 

Well I am in FL but it wasn't an extremely hot night, like 75 I guess.

 

i ran 14.9-15.1 with my 7 and its a 88 n/a

god i love my car

dont know why yours was running so slow, check compression, cats clogged, what psi etc etc

 

Ya I want to check compression, though I might be scared of the results. Don't have the money for a rebuild right now anyways, but maybe I can do the ATF trick and get some compression back. Whats a good price for a compression check anyways?
