very bad bucking and hesitation

hey all

since i have just recently got my 10th AE registered im driving it around more. but when i romp on the gas it likes to buck and loose power. im assuming its electrical because when it bucks my stereo turns off but come back on once i resume light/partial throttle. so which ground is MOST beneficial for me to clean/replace and should i do any mechanical related replaceing? id really like it to stop bucking like this. it doesnt seem good for an engine.

PS i am also confused about the grounding of the electronics there are too many contradictory statements

clean battery terminals. check + out on alternator. check main ground connection from battery. check wiring at leading coil.

Ummm... once you get all that check and its still there... check your TPS.. Check that you are not hitting fuel cut..

if its only the stereo thats cutting out, not the dash lights, etc.. I think it more likely that you have an engine control issue thats causing the bucking and a loose stereo connection thats causing the stereo to blink out when the car bucks

well its like this as i was going to school in 1st pulling out from a stop goes good up to the shift point and then its starts to buck so i pull the clutch out and rev a little. and its just very annoying. and how could i hit fuel cut? im not even boosting when it bucks

:EDIT:

also with the stereo i notice that its just the speakers that cut out and i have an aftermarket compnet box its wired kinda shitty from what i can see. and i hear like crackling noises when i take a hard right. sounds like a short to me. but im gonna check those grounds and refurbish those

Bring that lil' baby to the Raleigh Rotary Drive-In on Saturday and we'll go over it with you. I have an 89 GTU and there are several guys with FCs that will be able to help you out. What your car is doing isn't normal and we can help you get it under control.

What info did you get with it from the seller? Any known problems? Are you seeing any diagnostic codes reported? Do you have a Haynes manual and have you done any trouble shooting from the Factory Service Manual?

Couple of questions if you don't mind. I've been troubleshooting a similar problem with mine.

Does it go ahead and rev out pretty normally after it hesitates?

If it revs up, when you let off does it buck?

I have been around and around the block unsuccessfully on mine. Compression, grounds(all), TPS, AFM, ECU, clean injectors, boost sensor pill, you name it.

it is a common mistake for people to screw up when wiring the stereo. look for a black/red wire. that is the wire for the lights circuit. make sure it isnt getting grounded.

What kinda gas are you runnin? Mine used to "buck" back when i first got mine and the guy I bought it from said he's always run regular gas in it. When I decided to try premium because I heard it is better for turbos, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the car ran MUCH better, and the relatively violent bucking was instantly completely gone.

I dont know about your lights cutting out, though.
Thats just something to try, if you arent already using higher octane gas.
Gets way better gas milage now too, so its actually not much if any more expensive.

i use 87 as suggested in the owners manual, dont see too much use of it on a stock engine

i just swear there is a short somewhere i go around a turn real fast and try to romp on it to kick the tail and and BUCK BUCK BUCK i have to disengauge the clutch rev the engine for a sec then put it back in gear. im gonna redo the tranny fluid tommorow if i have time. and i'll just be checkin stuff allll day

I used to have a similiar problem, my engine would just die for about a second on hard left corners. I thought it was some sort of electrical problem at first, but the problem turned out to be the strainer on the fuel pump. I replaced it with one from Checker.. problem fixed.

On my 87 GXL i had problems like fuel cut. The idle would also drop like it was going to die and then come back. Very random. Turned out to be that i had knocked loose the connector on the water thermosensor under the alternater. You might check it.
