Vert top trouble

This is an intermittant problem that is at worst annoying, curious to see if anyone else has run into it.
Occasionally, the top will not go back down. No beeping, no nothing. Tried a different switch, nada. Later, somehow, it'll work fine for days.
In looking at the FSM, I suspect there is a switch on/in the motor causing this. Do I have to replace the motor to fix the switch? Any way of narrowing down which switch/motor is the culprit?
BTW, top going up has never failed, always the down cycle that fails.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Intermittant problems are the work of the 'debbil'! (waterboy )

There is a top test connector out under the hood on the front of the passengers shock tower.

When the switch is not working you should be able to jumper the top wires at that plug and make the top work. If it does not, then the motors or relays in the motors are bad.

The test connector is a white/clear 6 pin plug with 5 wires in it.

The colors are:

green/white for close
red/white for open
and switched ignition is black/yellow (the positive power source that you are jumpering onto the green/white or red/white.

BTW also in that test plug will be a red (ground when parking brake is on) and black, (ground always).

Thanks, Icemark, I figured you'd know something about this. Next failure I'll check the plug, but is there any way to fix the relays/switches themselves without replacing the motors?
Also, is there a manual way to lower the top (mines an S4) like there is on the S5's?

Supposed to be screws through the holes on each interior side panel but I've yet to find the screws.

Anyone know if it is a phillips or flat, can you really get to it without taking off the plastic?
