Variable resistor screw-is this needed to adjust idle?
Is this supposed to be a plastic flat or phillips head? Mine looks broken. Do I need to use this before idle speed screw? Thanks.

I think he means the idle mixture screw which is bolted to a bracket on the passenger side strut tower. It is a resistor with wires coming off it. It adjusts the idle mixture. You are supposed to tweak it until the idle gets smooth (when this happens your idle will be just rich enough) but not too far so as to make it pig rich. It adjusts the idle range mixture only. I think it is phillips. Mine was covered with some kind of glue that I will need to scrape off when I get around to fiddling with it again.

Common screwdrive will do once the goop is taken off. Its not needed for setting the idle, but can be used if the idle won't set right. See the fuel section of the 88 manual at http:www.iluvmyrx7.com for setting the idle speed.
1. Hot engine.
2. Set the timing.
3. install the initial set coupler
4. adjust the idle screw on top of the dynamic chamber
5. set the tps just after step two above, then do three and four.
6. something like the above, just look at the online fsm at the above url
7. If you decided to adjust the variable resistor, please get your meter out and look and see what the output of the variable resistor is prior to turning the screw. That way you can always return the setting to where you found it. No meter......mark where the screw was prior to adjusting the screw.
