variable resistor fixed idle and hesitations

I almost maxed out the variable resistor near the air box to rich or R as it says and now my bumpy idle and hesitations across the power band are gone. My question is, is it okay to have it like this or should I be looking for something causing my lean condition. It's an 88 NA so I'm still struggling to understand how I was apparently running lean.

I still have quite a bumpy power band in neutral though, like holding the throttle at just about any RPM I can hear backfiring or something to that effect and the it jumps around as much as 200 rpms.

Timing is dead on and advance works as per FSM instructions. No error codes from ECU Check lamp and the TPS was set also using check lamp.

It was dead. now I'm able to put the variable resistor on medium. But now I seem to be having hot start problems. That might have something to do with my rigging my water thermoswitch with some aluminum foil so it would make contact with the connector.
