Variable Resistor

hey guys i know this is a kinda newb question but what exactly is a variable resistor and what is it used for in na's. i have a grounding issue i believe might be on the motor? my lights and cluster dim and idle drops a bit. i dont have one on mine but all my emmisions are gone didnt know if this might be the cause

The variable resistor enrichens or leans out your idle air mixture.
