The value of good grounds
The value of good grounds
As the vets on this board all know, don't underestimate the importance of good grounds on the second gen.
I have been troubleshooting a no start situation on a 86 base for a while now. Here is what I did:
I first diagnosed it as a no fuel issue. I pulled the pump (I still think there are problems with it), cleaned up the electrical connections, got the pump running, so I eliminated that issue. Tested the fuel pressure. Checked for spark.
Then I tested all of the following:
CAS (for signal to the ecu)
Injectors (12v to one side as should be), I only looked at the secondaries, because I could get to the primaries without pulling the UIM.
Solenoid resistor
Main relay
Then I sprayed a little ether in the engine and it momentarily started. Thats' when I knew for sure it was lack of fuel.
ECU. This is where it got interesting, and I found my first real trouble. I checked for voltage on the ground pins on the ecu with the key on. I have 12V at two of the grounds! Trouble.
So, I pulled the UIM, cleaned up the two grounds under the manifold. Put dielectric grease on them, reinstalled.
Now the car starts right up!
Never underestimate the importance of good grounds.

I plan on redoing all my factory ground points on my 1991 GTX when i get it. Part of my full car tune up. Just read aaroncakes write up on it.

I think everybody should do this, would solve a lot of problems.
