Update: Alt problem fixed
Now getting a full 14 volts.
As you may recall, I was only getting 12, and no charge from the alt. Wiring was good (just inspected it after unpacking the harness) and the wiring bundle wasn't shorting on anything. I noticed that a 2 prong connector wasn't hooked up, but looked over the wiring diagram, and initially didn't think the connector did much beyond triggering the alternator relay.
Well, looking at the wiring diagram closer, I do believe there's more to it, and the black/white wire appears to help control the internal voltage regulator somehow. But, I had no connector for the altnerator, and it wasn't on the engine harness on the drivers side (where the manual said it was). @*%*. Tracing the wiring back to the connector at the Front harness, I found blanks where those two wires (b/w and w/b) should have been. Then looked at the connector on the front harness, and instead of the right b/w and w/b colors, I had brown and brown something! @#%*!!!!!!! Turns out that my replacement Front harness was from an automatic.
To make a long story short, I splice the wires out of the front harness and hooked them up to the alternator. 14Volts again.. Woohooo!
So, lessons learned. You do need that 2 prong connector on the alternator, the front harness and egnine harness for 86-88 IS different slightly between auto and manuals.
