The other nite my car the car started making weird noises from the shifter area. Its a winding whirry noise. I pull off my shifter bezel and i can see straight to the ground. Is the something supose to be there? or is it normal?

you pull off the shifter bezel - you mean the trim boot and the rubber surround that just snaps off? if you see ground right under that then you are missing some parts. check out item (J) on this page: http://mazdatrix.com/g4.htm that 3-piece assembly is supposed to sit underneath your leather trim boot. without enough insulation in that area, you will hear lots of noise from the road and driveshaft, and gets LOTS of heat from the exhaust system.

if the noises just started, I can only assume that the last of the insulation finally fell out recently?

for lack of money, I've fabbed up a big plate using duct tape, t-shirts, and newspaper to do the job that item (J) is supposed to do. it stops all the heat and noise from getting in the cabin. anyone know what the flash point of duct tape is?

^ sweet. yeah the way I see it, $48 for that assembly is 25% of the cost for a short shifter!!! I have my priorities = )
