Thumbs up Universal joint replacement 86 gxl

Hey fellas..have an 86 gxl n/a that I think has a bad U-Joint. Has shaft has lots of play while turnining (didnt see any play in the joint itself)..Parts came in on tuesday from rockfordriveline.com (ordered two joints since im down there i may as well replace both.) Going to work on it tommorow and post pictures and maybe a lil write up for you guys

News today: checked out the exhaust, and the bolts are caked in rust! i tried the good ol dub dee 40 but no luck. Next possible steps: sawzall, sledge hammr, oxy setaline torch etc. looking at new bolts now.

looks like we have the same problem, on both fronts

i jacked up my car to drop the exhaust so i could get to the driveshaft, and as i start turning one of the bolts connected to a screw, the whole piece moves, so there's nothing short of cutting it off on my list now :/

I did a write-up on U-joint replacement a while back. You can do a new one like you mentioned, or you're welcome to add to, or steal, from that one.

your write up is nice.. problem is.. my camera went outa batteries!

I ended up pounding the old joints out. OMG they were so rusted, and even one of the seals where broken already. The inside shaft of where the roller bearings were there are imprints of where the roller bearings sit!.

Jordan, i had the same issue with my exhuast bolts!. When it came to removing the exhuast, I didnt have enough room as i thought i would have with a sawzall, and a dremmel tool woulda been a PITA, so it came down to the oxy setaline torch. I torch it enough to turn red but not melt so carefull guys if its your first time using on oxy setaline. It came right off.. also with the drive shaft bolts i had to use my torch agian. Everything was rusted so bad because the last owner took this car to the mountain pass, with studed tires, to go snowboarding!

haha, well im glad you were able to finally get yours off. im hearing a lot of people having to use those oxy setaline torches to get those bolts off (as well as use them to help get the u-joints out), so i guess i'll have to look into getting one of those in the future.

so you got the new ones in fine? if so, that's awesome, hope it fixes your issue!
