u joint & driveshaft question??

i dont know if this is a stupid question but i took my car to my mechanic and he said i need a new driveshaft and my u joints are shot. he said he could rebuild it for 450$ but i have a spare car at home so i'm just going to take the one off there and swap it. i just want to make sure though that the u joints and driveshaft are all one peice? when you take it out it all comes out at once right? its all together??

Yes, it's all one piece, you take the 4 bolts off of the rear, were it bolts to the diff, and push it forward a bit, then drop it down, and pull it out of the back of the transmission.

Also, I think your mechanic might have been pulling your leg, because the U-joints are non-replacable.....

Both cars have the same transmission/engine (both are either manual/automatic, and both are Turbo/NA.)

If your car is a manual, and the parts car is an automatic, it won't fit.

I had a Mazda specialist mechanic replace the drive shaft on my '90 coup two years ago. The rear U joint was shot. Replaced with a Mazda OEM for 450. Do a search. You can replace just the U joints but they will not be OEM. They have not been available for all that long so how long they will last is pure speculation. That route will be a lot less than the 450. May be best for you if you do not plan on keeping it for a long time.
