Two different wiper switch relays?

I need to repair my 1986 GXL's and my 1988 GTU's wiper switches. Both do not work on any speed but Low and one doesn't park the blades at the bottom of the glass. There's probably a third one laying about in the shed or in one of the cars that I'm going to repair as well.

I've ordered the relay G6C-2114-US-DC12 from DigiKey. However, I have one big question.

Icemark (RIP) has that one part number listed on his website here:
http://mazdamark.com/DIY_wiper_repair.htm

However, he resells the relays here listing TWO different relays:
http://mazdamark.com/Rebuilt%20FC%20Parts.htm

I know there are two relays in a standard wiper switch and three in a car equipped with a rear wiper. But I thought all three relays are the same. Icemark made no mention of a second type of relay in the DIY repair instructions, nor a mention of a different part number.

As a side note, he also mentions he uses the relay in Headlight Switch repairs. My parking lights don't come on most of the time in the GXL and the wiring harness is charred, so I figure it's high time to rebuild that too.

Which relay? The one I have already or the one I can't find?

Anyone have a part number?
(BTW, Searched, browsed archives, and still haven't found it.)

I just rebuilt the wiper switch in my '88 GTU using Icemark's excellent DIY instructions myself. I did notice that his instructions were not entirely clear on the relays involved.

The relay you've already ordered is the correct one for replacing "Relay 1" as identified in Icemark's instructions. With the switch oriented as it fits in the dash, this is the lowest relay in the switch. That's the one which controls the intermittent and park functions. If your wipers work normally on the "low" speed, that' probably all you need to replace.

However, if you were having a problem with "low" speed, you'd need also to replace "Relay 2" from Icemark's guide; this is the "middle" relay if you have a rear wiper or the higher of the two if not. That Omron part number is G5LE-14-DC12 (Digikey part number Z1012-ND). I wish I'd known this before placing my Digikey order since this relay is about $1.50 and I'd have just replaced mine so I don't ever have to do this job again.

As far as I know, "Relay 3" or the one for the rear wiper is the same as "Relay 1." My car doesn't have a rear wiper, so I can't confirm this for certain.

Good luck with the switches.

Is that the part number for the updated sealed, high current relay or the part number for the original craptastic relay that Mazda put in?

A search using HAILERS and MOUSER will get you the part numbers of the relays.

The top relay (only used on cars with rear wipers) and the bottom relay are the same item. Buy the one in the middle also.
