twin scroll question

Alright, we just removed the vac rack off the motor and the exhaust manifold off the motor. Of course we were dumb and didn't label anything so it should be fun putting it back together.

We would like to remove the twin scroll setup so that we can get rid of the vac rack. Looking in the exhaust manifold I can see a flap kind of thing. Is this the twin scroll?

If so..... can I remove it permanently from the manifold, or is it something else? I have heard you can wire it open? I would like to remove it but I am not sure if it is a smart thing to do.

Thanks for any help.

That flap inside the manifold is the twin scroll. You can remove it, and plug the hole, without any ill effects. Other then the fact that you will be waiting all day for boost!

It's easy to keep the twin-scroll system operational after vac rack removal. Look at page 4B-53 in the FSM for the schematic of the system. Remove the solenoid from the rack and mount it on the firewall (or somewhere), run a line from the bottom nipple on the front of the LIM to the check valve (pull it off the rack), then to the solenoid, then to the metal line that runs to the switching actuator. Look at the schematic carefully to ensure the solenoid and check valve are oriented correctly. The check valve should only allow air to flow to the manifold.

The reason mazda got rid if it in the S5 is because the turbo was redesigned. I have ran them both ways, and A working twin scroll is benificial for the stock setup.
