turbo replacement

Hey guys, Im looking to buy a TII (around the san francisco area if anyone's selling) and there is one im interested although i thought id ask for some advice. The car (91) has a jdm engine with 40k miles although the turbo is bad and the guage cluster doesn't light up. the guy has a new s5 turbo that is not installed. my question is how difficult would it be to replace the turbo myself and if it is over my head, how much do you think it would cost to have it done professionally? same thing goes with the guage cluster. Thanks

has the car had any vacuum reduction done under the hood? does it have ABS? Still have the heat shields and stock exhaust? the closer it is to stock, the more **** there will be in the way, and the longer it will take. on my 88 I have just about nothing under there. I could probably get the turbo off in 45 minutes.

if its completly stock itll take a minute to get that turbo off.. a shop would probably charge you, I'd say, 6-8 hours to do it at an average rate of 90/hour. If you do it yourself just make sure you have all the right tools. A lift would help a bit also. I'd check the compression on the engine also, If the turbo is worn down to where it needs a new one there may be a slight chance the engine is in the same condition. Just out of curiousity, was it rebuilt? if it wasn't how do you know theres 40k miles on it?
