Turbo an NA? 87 glx opinions?ideas?

Hey i own a glx, and i am in the proess currently of upgradig the exhaust, after which i want to turbo it. I know it is possible, i was wondering if i could bolt it on or f i had to rebuild the internals of my engine? will i blow it up? as long as i replace the clutch and the apex seals will the car handle it?

Would a Stock 3rd gen twin turbo bolt on somehow? would it be better to use a stock turbo or an upgraded turbo?
thanks!!

First of all, you do not own a "glx".
Some stupid idiot decided to transpose letters - Mazda calls the model a "GXL".

Second, yes, you can turbo your non-turbo, but it's not recommended.
Check the FAQ stickies or do a search - lots of info on this are in here.

Third, the 13B-REW twin-turbo engine from an FD3S does "bolt in", but that's the easy part.
Trying to get it to run and run well is a whole 'nother ballgame.
Basically, you can't afford it.

ted knows a fair bit of honest rx-7 truth, and deals up the truth. So don't be offended. I've watched many people come and go long before seeing their dream 7's come true.

I'm halfway through building the motor for mine, w/ n/a s4 9.4:1 rotors.
This motor is brand new, and built to use a turbo from the beginning. I'll have a full turbo II since I started with a REAL t2, and im still gonna be thousands deep in just parts that are supporting mods, koyo rad, upgraded intercooler, make sure all my spark, and fuel is ****. all new injectors and walbro pump.
no screwing around w/ my investment in this motor. As I'll see $0 return and it can only be measured in miles of pleasure being driven like a raped ape

If you want to turbo, you can do it on the cheap. Fabbing up everything yourself, which is not just simple stuff. For maybe $500 on a dirt *** cheap ghetto as ALLLLLLLLLLLL hell setup. It would be far from ideal and take some knowhow to make solid.
I can almost guarantee your motor will pop within a few thousand miles if you're putting any sort of real boost through a tired old n/a motor.

A rebuild would be better if you have a fiarly high mileage engine. A standalone computer would be the next thing after that.
Once you've done those, the two most important, and expensive parts. You can just start slapping on parts as long as you tune for them accordingly.
Don't skimp on your computer. Realize your ultimate goals and spec out the brand and model of standalone that is right for N/A turbo swap.
People do run the stock n/a computers, but I wouldnt risk it. It's not designed for turbo and is only a timebomb until it comes apart.
This will be expensive. Start saving
And ask any questions that you still have. In all honesty, I don't know ****. Not many people really do. But I've been around long enough to see what has and hasn't blown up on other peoples car. Most of my word is insight from someone elses experiences.

Good luck,
Ben Martin
