Turbo II Spark Problems

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if I could get some help. I have a 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE with a JDM S4 TII Motor and trans and a N332 ECU. The engine turns over but only sparks everyone couple of seconds. Does anyone have any idea what my problem might be. I'm only 18 and this is my first seven.

How are you confirming spark?
Inductive timing gun?
The car is notorious for not being able to trigger these guns consistently.
Try and pull the spark plug boot off the coil a few inches, before it falls totally off.
The wider gap will allow the timing gun to trigger more consistently.

I am using an inline spark-checker. It plugs in between the spark plug and wire and flashes when the plug fires.

Did this engine ever run in the past? Is this something that you installed? And are you using the series four coils/ignitors? And using the series four CAS????

I bought the motor from Osaka JDM motors and installed it. The CAS came with the motor. The coils are second gen. Not sure if 4 or 5. I checked the signal wire to the the leading coil and the coil fires when it receives a signal from the ECU.

No clue here. You might try laying a sparkplug wire on the fender. Then remove the cas from its bore but leave the elect plug on it. Key to ON and twirl the cas bottom gear and if the sparks from the sparkplug are good, then maybe, just maybe there is no problem at all.

IF you don't get consistent sparks when twirling the cas bottom gear, then ring out the cas reluctors/coils FROM the ECU wiring to see if there is continuity or not. There is a value for the coils to be found in the FSM.

There's some value from removing the cas and doing the above. The starter does not get worn down from extensive cranking and the rotors don't get washed down with fuel which in turn causes a loss of some compression and makes the starting of the engine even harder than required. You also should be able to hear the primary injectors click if you listen carefully.

Hey. I got it to start. Turns out I had the wiring backwards on the CAS. Now it starts, but shuts off in about three seconds. As long as the motor turns, I'm getting spark so it doesn't seem to be the ignition. I'm guessing the AFM is not sending a good signal. I am using the GSL-SE meter still. Could this be a problem?
