Which turbo to get for ~250 RWHP, and where to get it?
I've been trying to decide on a turbo to get for my 6-port engine. I plan on fabbing my own exhaust manifold and all that, so that's not much of a concern of mine.. I was thinking of a BNR, dunno which stage, but I'm not sure where to pick one up?
I'm trying to keep my budget somewhere around 2500 or less, I can do all of the fabrication myself, and I have access to a full 5-axis machining center, and I was planning on getting the Greddy FMIC because EVERYONE seems to think that just paying them to engineer the damn FMIC is worth it
My setup will include some new injectors, as well, I was thinking of going with a 720/1000 setup, managed by my Megasquirt. Along with a LM1 for tuning.
So, the only question I guess I have left is: Which turbo should I go with? I'm trying to avoid turbo lag as much as possible, and I'm hoping to put off upgrading to TII suspension for another year or so. Please include where I can aquire said turbos, since I don't seem to be having much luck finding them by myself.
Thanks

How long willyou have the line on the FMIC? I'm not looking to purchase anything until January or so.. I'm thinking a BNR Stage 2 should fit my needs, too.. but I can't find any good compairons between the BNR stages..

Shoot, not that long. I striped a totaled 10AE with a $1200 greddy IC kit from corksport (even have the reciept) Has about 1k on it and we are going Vmount and are not using it. Only paid $2k for the whole car with a pinapple 3mm motor, full 3" back exhaust, SAFCII, and stole the whole drivetrain for a NA conversion.

You can use the Garrett GT32. I think it's about $700 from Himni Racing. Capable of about 400-450 HP. Nothing wrong with a little over kill. Will spool very very fast for the horsepower capabilites as well. Hear lemme see if I can find it........ Got it...

Or if your sure you want to stop at 250 HP, the Garret GT25R will get you 250 easy, and be completely insanely instant spool. It's costs a bit more than the GT32 because of ball bearing.

Thanks for the info, First Gen Man.. I'm a little nervous about going with the GT25R, because it seems like everyone just recommneds that (on different forums, and online generally) for 4-cylinder apps, and only getting 250 out.. I'm a bit worried that with the flow of a rotary, it would be a restriction at highe RPms.. probably unfounded
I'm definately checking out the GT32..
Thanks again

Stock turbo will do it. If I was only going for 250HP, I would find a nice condition S5 turbo, port the wastegate, and make a manifold. It will spool like crazy.

Yah, I was going to say, with a FMIC and bigger injectors you should get 250 on the stocker turbo.
With the stock TMIC and only running 5psi on my higher compression ported engine I got 222rwhp untuned, with basically no boost after 6,000rpm.

keep in mind that if you are using the higher compression N/A rotors... that each Lb of boost in going to give a significantly higher amount of HP than on a turbo rotor...
250-300 HP is a good number to shoot for, but, I don't know about using the completely STOCK turbo, it amy not have the efficeincy numbers to keep the charge stable (remeber 6psi is 6psi... BUT the AIR MASS can vary retardedly depending on the turbo's efficiency and its effect on charge temp.. and its the MASS that you want to keep stable)
Why don't you give Bryan a call at BNR (205) 640-1193 and expain what you are wanting to do..
or drop him an email with your specs at BNRsupercars@yahoo.com
AND... For your HP numbers... I'd go with an S4 turbo... why... Bryan puts a BIG ASSED 35 MM wastegate in the S4 turbos... and i've NEVER had boost creep at ANY boost setting... NEVER... the S5's dual flappers cause some problems with size limitations and, the s5 is just more expensive!!!!

I dynoed at 294 with a BNR stage1, RTEK1.5, Greedy FMIC and 720's @10psi. I've had great luck with the BNR turbo and if I had to upgrade again it would be another BNR turbo.
I also have an S4 turbo and the wastegate is huge. He welds in a new flapper and ports the hell out of the wastget port like YearsOfDecay said.

yeah.. I've seen an S5 turbo make 250RWHP. if thats all you want then thats not a bad choice.. but you it may not last long pushing it that hard.. might be worth it to get a small stage1 upgrade from somewhere.

Time for potentially stupid stock TII turbo question: Is it possible/practicle to port the exhaust inlet side of the turbo? I realize the exhaust side of the turbo, as well as both of the intake ports are just thin tubes, but looking at the pictures, it looks likea decent amount of material can be taken off the side that bolts to the exhaust manifold?
