Turbo axle lengths different depending on stub shafts?

short version: I'm using 87 stub shafts with 89+ axles, the 87 stub shafts stick out further, do I need shorter axles?

long version: so I recently rebuild my who rear subframe and drove it for the first time today, and the rear end is whining a moderate amount. I replaced my stock S5 Turbo Viscous LSD with an 87 Turbo pumpkin with an FD Torsen in it with stock 4.10 gears. I have MS diff bushings and solid subframe bushings... so it could have just gotten louder because of that, but I'm worried by the stub shaft length difference.

no you do not need shorter axles.
those stub lengths matter only internally to the differential

I'm not worried about the internal lengths of the stub shafts. If you look at the 87 one compared to the 87-88 one where the axle connects to it it sticks out of the diff an extra cm or so.

yeah... I think I just answered my own question because the VIN changes on the axles don't match up with the VIN changes on the stub shafts...

Thanks guys.

I just want to update this thread just in case anyone finds it later.

There are 2 different Turbo axles. early '87 axles and then all the rest...
part#s:
M040-25-500D
M040-25-500E

They match up with the 2 different style stub shafts:

make sure you have the correct ones...

Makes since.

I swapped my axles (early 87 turbo) For some 10ae axles I got from the yard (yeah..i know). They were a pita to install, its like they were too long to fit. I eventually got them in, but ended up ripping the boot in the process.

That started the search for more axles, this time 90 jspec units. The difference being that I installed them with the 10ae diff (instead of my early 87) they went in just fine.

Glad to know I wasn't crazy.

Even if they use the same axles, is it safe to switch the S4's with the S5's? looks to me as if the grooved smooth section is different. They go farther into the diff as well.
If using the FD torsen maybe the FD axle stubs are in order?

Also does anyone know if you're using the Mazdaspeed LSD pack, what axle stubs should you use in that case?

The FD doesn't use stub shafts, the axles go strait into the differential (picture from google image search):

I'm currently using S4 stub shafts with an FD torsen on my S5 with 2 full seasons of autocross on it and it works fine.

If you look at the OSGiken LSD site, they actually tell you to use '86-88 stub shafts if you want to use their LSD on an '89-91...

I wonder if the mazdaspeed recommends the S4. The guy I bought it from says it uses the S5s but, from the look of things you can get away with either. I'm a bit worried about the strength of the S5 short stub mostly.

They don't just recommend the S4 shafts... they're required. the snap rings are in different places on the S4 and S5 shafts. S5 shafts only work for the OEM viscous LSD, that's it.

Well we havent confirmed anything on what mazdaspeed says about their carriers. The guy said it uses the S5's but we'll see. I'll look at it when it arrives and post what I find.

i wonder how hard it would be to get rid of the stub shafts and just run axles like the FD does.

Ya, I do believe some of the options from the driveshaftshop.com come one piece.
