trying to remove aux port actuator, won't come off!!

i recently found out that one of my auxilary port actuators isn't opening. great, i hate these 'little' problems that are starting to pop up. anyways, i am pretty sure that it is the actuator, not the sleeve. i first tried to drench the thing with penetrating lube (GUNK liquid wrench), spraying it all over the rod. i let it sit overnight, and then in the morning tried pushing the rod down with my hand. that didn't work, so i just cursed a bit. i decided i would have to take out the actuator since i can barely work with it (it is the annoying one closest to the front of the car).

please refer to the S4 FSM, fuel and emission control system_na, page 4A-60:
i removed the 2 attaching nuts, and i figure that it just slides off, right? it looks like you just pull the actuator towards you, and it should slide off the two bolts and the aux port lever. well, it slid off the two bolts, but then it just stops. it doesn't seem to want to slide off the lever. actually, the little thingy that is attached to the lever doesn't want to move at all. am i missing something here, or should it just slide right off? i have tried pulling really hard, and also tried getting it off the lever. it doesn't want to move. even more frustrating is the fact that there is no room to work, what with the intake and air pump in the way. i can't even get a saw in there to cut the bastard off, because that's what i feel like doing

please, help me to get this off

Hehe... little problems are the story of these cars man. They turn into big ones. But you can squish that with hard work, money, time, and a LOT of patience.

The way I got my also-very-stuck 6pi actuators off (let me see if I can remember back almost a year when my 'vert was still NA) ... I *think* I had to use some gooseneck pliers, and maybe a little shim or something. If the pin that the actuator connects to the lever with sticks out from the actuator, vis:

==|E|=

the horizontal thing made up of '=' is the pin. the |E| thing is the rectangular part of the actuator which runs vertically down to the actuator itself. If you can get the pliers on the top edge of the actuator part, and also on the protruding edge of the pin, you may be able to exert enough sideways force to pop the actuator loose from the pin. Or you can use the same pliers to twise the rectangular part on the pin to break it free.

Once its off, use sandpaper and/or steel wool to smooth that shaft and the inside of the actuator, test the actuator per the FSM, and apply a little anti-sieze to the pin before you reassemble it. Also make sure the pin turns easily by hand with the actuator off. If not, the sleeve is stuck and you'll need to pull the lower manifold off to pull the sleeve out and clean it and the port it slides into. Lubricate with a little WD-40 or motor oil (I used a bit of both) and put the sleeve back in so that it turns smoothly.

If you end up needing another 6pi actuator, a sleeve, or other parts I'm selling all of my NA stuff very cheaply.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO! i got it off!

digitalsynth you indirectly led me to the solution. i got out my pliers and started doing what you said. the thing is the pin could already come out a bit. it was like this:

!===|E|

so there was no pin to exert force on. i just kept on trying to figure out a way to get off, and i also kept spraying liquid wrench on it...so then i tried this: it the little diagram above, the "!" is the actuator lever, and the "|E|" is the rectangular thing on the actuator rod. i took a small pair of needlenose pliers, put it sideways in between the "!" and the "|E|", held it down with my fingers, and just spread it apart. it came off! i can't believe it. anyways, that's how i did it...oh yeah, one tip: try to get as much out of the way as possible. i took off a part of the upper intake, and definetly made it easier.

...so i think my aux ports are still opening a little late, but at least they are both opening now! definetly notice more power in mid range and up top. and engine sounds better too!

and a word of caution, all that liberally sprayed WD-40 and liquid wrench finds its way to the exhaust manifold. needless to say, it creates a fair amount of smoke from the engine bay. i was freaking out for a bit, but then figured out what it was.
kinda smells like chicken too, for some odd reason...

geat that ****** with a stick. Then get some tools out and remove the LIM I did learn however, don't do this unless you ahve hours of spare time removing old gasket material, and you have new gaskets and copper ultra 2 around
