What's the key to this? The time I removed the original one in the car I just ended up cracking and breaking it, and don't really want to do the same with the replacement, but I want to get to the warning cluster. What's the best way to get this surround out safely?

You can see where it pops into the dash in relation to the edges in this picture. Just carefully pry up at those locations and it should come out without breaking.
