transmission woes

my transmission isnt doing all that great..... it grinds into 5th everytime unless i get it right at the right rpm, and it has a hard time going into reverse sometimes, and grind between gears if i shift any faster than VERY SLOW when the car is cold. I'm assuming I need a better one.... Should I buy a used one from someone? or somewhere? Or should I get it rebuilt? I don't have much money at all, what do you guys think I should do? Also... is there any difference between a S4 and S5 tranny?

Thanks,

Tom

A quick test:
Idleling in neutral, listen for the tranny gear noise.
Step on the clutch.
The gears should spin down in about 2 seconds.
If they keep spinning much longer, the clutch is dragging.

Possible causes:
Worn out clutch master or slave cylinder.
Old soft (bulging) hose.
Bad pilot bearing.
Clutch disc coming apart.

Another possible cause:
Low fluid or air in the line.
