Transmission Seals

In anyones experience have they ever had a transmission leak because they did not replace the seals in the front and rear when they pulled it out to do work?

I have read on a couple sites now about how you should replace the atleast the front seal and gasket when you are working on the transmission. And wanna know if its really a critical thing. Thanks

never had problems with transmission leaking in front (into bellhousing), but had to replace rear seal (where driveshaft connects) once...

I have never had any kinda problems with any tranny work before... so I guess until it leaks I leave it alone.

If the tranny's out then just replace them, they're cheap and it's a lot less work than removing the tranny later on to replace a leaking seal. My front seal leaks (very slowly, but it still does), and I've got a reman motor in my car with about 30000km's and 3 years on it. It's pretty much always leaked, and they didn't change the seal.

I don't know if they had the tranny out too, I wouldn't think so, but it's a good idea to change hard to get to seals whenever you have acess to them. Especially for the rear seal, as it can be damaged by the act of inseting and removing the driveshaft.

I replaced my clutch (Napa clutch went boom) and wanted to replace the seals, but couldn't get them fast enough so skipped it. Needless to say the front seal leaked, and now I must replace the transmission (scary noises coming from within). Good thing I kept a spare tranny around.
