Transmission Questions - Searched

Okay so I want to make my daily driving experience a little better.

My tranny shifts like crap. I want to replace the jiffylube oil and put in whatever is recomended. I know you put honda gear fluid in a honda it shifts great... Before I go buy some I want to know I'm going to like the results. So, what do you guys use?

also, what is the deal with this eBay short shifter for $80 bucks. Is it worth my time and money?

Are the shift linkages from an n/a to a TII interchangeable? (S4)

If you couldn't tell I'm not so fluent with thransmissions yet... Is there a gasket or something I can replace under the mounting bracket that holds in my shift linking?

I use Royal Purple synthetic gear oil. It lets the syncros engage a bit smoother when compared to normal gear oil. It is very expensive though, at $8.00 a qt (iirc) you have to decide if its worth it for the small gain it provides. One of the best things you can do for your tranny is replace worn/broken/missing shifter bushings. To this date, I have never seen a S4 that had intact/functioning shifter bushings. For around $30.00 or less you can retain the factory shifter and have a far more confident shift feel.

why haven't you seen an s4 with a proper working shifter bushing? are you saying that if i go get one from the dealership it wont help anything? And if 8 bucks makes things better i find it very worth it.

They are broken because of wear, age, and neglect. Replacing bad shifter bushings will have the most positive effect on your shifting short of rebuilding the transmission. 1 qt may only be 8 bucks but you have to buy 3 qts, 5 if you want to do your diff too. I'm just warning you that it adds up.

+1 on the shifter bushing. Mazdatrix and Atkins both have the kits.

Redline MT90 is also good gear lube if you can't find the royal purple. Most of the high quality synthetics will be fine.

You want gear oil. Not motor oil. It's GL5 I believe. I just went to napa + got 5 bottles of their SAE 80W-85W-90. Works alright.

BUT- one thing you NEED is a hand pump. My pops had one that you just crank. Trust me, you can't get a bottle in there to fill the tranny very well unless you fill from the shifter.

I need to get some shifter bushings as well. My C's short shifter suffers from sloppy shifter dick.

90 weight is standard. I'm using some 75W-90 Neo synthetic that I bought from Mazdatrix. It's not cheap, but it shifts great.

And to fill the transmission, some 3/8" heater hose and a funnel works perfectly. Run it up into the engine bay, and pour the oil in.
